Question by Cory Ransbottom: I was diagnosed with sleep apnea when I was 15 and over weight, can I still Join the Army?
When I was 15 I was quite overweight and my doctor told me that I had sleep apnea after doing a sleep lab study. He recommended me to get surgery which I never got, because I figured it was because of my weight and didn’t want them to carve me up unnecessarily, which, they like to do to get money ha ha. I am now 25 and am in very good shape, work out every day, run and eat reasonably healthy and I don’t think that I have sleep apnea any more. I feel just fine during the day and I truly don’t feel tired all the time like I used to. I have gone and talked to the recruiter a couple of times, but need to get my GED and 15 semester hours of college courses to enlist which I am working on constantly. I should note that I haven’t told him about my former history of sleep apnea yet, I know that sleep apnea is a DQ from the Army. I am very dedicated to joining and it would kill me to be told I can’t join because of something some doctor told me 10 years ago that doesn’t affect me any more. Would I just be better off not telling him, because I have read that they can’t get your medical records unless you give them permission. Please, only people that know what they are talking about answer this question (Army Recruiters, people currently or formerly serving).

Answer by BobBy In NH What they don’t know, wont hurt them. Find another doctor and get a psychical and do not tell him or her about it. Take the record of the psychical to your recruiter and have fun in boot camp!

Question by Erk: help me find a good healthy way to lose weight?
i need to lose weight desperately. i have always been overweight and i even had gastric bypass surgery five years ago. i lost 165 pounds. i have gained about 50 pounds back. i am terrified to gain the weight back. before i lost the weight i had uncontrollable high blood pressure, asthma and sleep apnea. i had to sleep with a breathing machine every night. i dont ever want to go back to that way of life but slowly i seem to be heading in that way. i keep trying but i cant get with the program. i cant do any thing like slim fast because i cant have alot of sugar because of the bypass, it makes me VERY sick. i wonder if anyone knows of a good healthy program. i am 43 and have a 3 year old little girl. i couldnt have children before the weight loss and as soon as i lost the weight i was blessed with this wonderful daughter. so i have alot to live for. i need help so if anyone knows of anything i would really love some advice. thanks.

Question by singing_angel_of_the_night: How much weight could I lose in 1 year, and how do I encourage myself to just finally do it?
I am 25 years old, and back in 2002, I was at a healthy weight of about 150 (I’m 5′8″). In the end of 2002, I met who is now my husband and we have had 4 children. I am now around 320 pounds. Most people say “Oh well, you’ve had 4 children, of course that’s why you’ve gained weight”..and my response to them is always “No, I used the excuse of being pregnant to eat whatever I wanted, that’s why I am this way.”. Well, the thing is now it’s worse than ever, I am always wanting something sweet, everyday. It’s like I am addicted to junk food and I’m having such a hard time trying to quit it. Soda and Junk – that’s basically what my everyday eating habits consist of. Depression may play a part in my eating habits, but I’m not depressed like “omg I wanna kill myself” depressed, more like a “I wish I could just get my old self back, and keep the husband and kids”…I’ve decided that no matter what starting the first of the year I am going to lose weight – I have to…I don’t have diabetes, or high blood pressure, but it’s only a matter of time. I already have sleep apnea. So my question is – how do I shake myself of always putting it off, making excuses and what are some good ways to break the junk eating habit – how can I motivate myself to just finally get up and do the darn thing? Yes I know, my kids and husband should be enough motivation, it’s just hard. If I walk my back hurts, i’m out of breath (ontop of that, Im a smoker, and that’s another thing I intend to let go of strike midnight on new years). Realistically, how much weight could someone my size loose in 1 year, just knocking out the soda, candy and junk – going to water, fruits and veggies and steamed and baked foods? Anyone have a success story or any tips?
Please, no rude comments, I beat myself up enough, I don’t need it from anyone else.
Thanks!

Answer by i.LovE.HoMeWorK…!!! Losing weight and getting fitter is really quite simple. All you have to do is a few simple things. Firstly, clear your fridge of fatty junk foods. If there’s no temptation, you cannot fall. Secondly, stock up on watermelon and other fruits. Watermelon is excellent because it clears out your digestive system of toxins and waste, leaving you feeling and being healthier. Next, begin exercising every day. Do not go too hard. If running, don’t go fast or uphill, unless you want bulky muscle. A steady pace each day for a minimum of 30 minutes will allow you to shed fat and tone your body. Set a day each week when you each junk food, but try not to go overboard and ruin the work of every other day. Drink plenty of water, often when you think you are hungry, you are actually thirsty. If you are getting cravings, have a glass of water, wait 5 minutes, and then see if you still want food. This usually gets rid of those nasty afternoon hunger pangs for me!
Good luck, and I hope you get the results you want!!

Question by findjenna: Sleep Apnea, pain and weight gain?
I have torn disk in my back and neck and arthritis in my neck as well (I have a lot more stuff, but these are my major complaints) My doctor sent me to a pain specialist and he thinks I have sleep apnea, that it may be why I am in pain and also why I can’t lose weight. Anyone else out there have Sleep Apnea and what are their symptoms? Did it help anyone else with loosing weight????
Best answer:
Answer by Virginia These are the reasons to get treated for sleep apnea.
1. Falling asleep at the wheel. Sleep apnea increases the risk of having a car accident by 7 times!
2. Heart disease. When you don’t get oxygen, your heart suffers by having to work extra hard to pump blood to the brain while not getting enough oxygen itself!
3. High Blood Pressure.
4. Stroke.
5. Impotence
6. Diabetes.
7. Headaches. You get headaches from not sleeping enough and not getting enough oxygen to the brain.
8. Sore throat. Because of the snoring, the dryness and frequent vibrations of the back of the throat causes it to be sore.
By helping you sleep better and more efficiently, you’ll be more energetic during the day. You can probably lose weight just by feeling better and less sleepy. It’s real easy to not exercise and just sit around and eat because you’re tired all of the time.

Question by Stephanie Murphy: my pcp dosent think sleep apnea is a good reason for weight loss surgery. what do i do?
Best answer:
Answer by terry Hi, Stephanie!
It depends how overweight you are:
- in you have an uncontrollable weight gain.
- a large neck (>16 inches around in women, >17″ around in men)
- if your Body Mass Index is above 30 (obesity)
then you should consider that obesity is the first cause in prevalence of sleep apnea.
Before choosing surgery, you should try to loose weight. Weight loss surgery is only for people who have no other option, because they are in danger to die.
Weight loss surgery is a danger procedure, and you should think twice before using it.
I hope it helps!
