If you suffer from sleep apnea, is it possible to be violent in your sleep and not remember?

He was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea, and his defense is using sleep apnea as the reason behind the beating. I’ve never heard of that, but I’m not an expert on sleep apnea. Does anyone know?
