I’m no doctor but shouldn’t she stop smoking in the house and around him? It makes me sick that she can’t stop for his sake and just this past winter he was hospitalized for pneumonia and bronchitis. She thinks it’s just the way it is and it has nothing to do with her. I really want to tell her off but she’s too hard headed.

He takes 2 inhalers a nite plus a ton of liquid meds to stop him from getting sicker. I can’t keep my mouth shut anymore! Ideas?

She was in for a sedation appointment to fill cavities when he noticed her lower jaw “falls over her throat” when she is sleeping (which can cause sleep apnea) and that it is very small.

He says if surgery is the answer, now is the time to do it. Otherwise we would have to wait until she is 17 or 18.
We saw the ENT first and he says nothing he can do- the oral surgeon needs to see her first.

Now as I wait for our first appointment (about 4 months since the dentist referred her) I have so many questions.
First, if she does need the surgery, is she going to be too old now- and will we have to wait until she is in her teenage years?

If she does need the surgery now- what can I expect? How long is the procedure, and more importantly about how long will it take for her to recover from it? What can I expect?

I realize I will get these answers once we get the appointment. I cannot find anything online about a young child having this surgery. I am just so anxious and worried for my daughter. She has a slight speech delay as well. Her dentist and speech pathologist both say this will help improve her speech along with other things.
Has anyone else had a young child go through this surgery before? Thanks in advance for the advice!

See an orthodontist, i think not to rush in to surgery for the jaws at this age she is still going to grow too much in her teen years

Change his diet, start helping him with physical therapy and exercise.
Ask yourself, if the roles were reversed, would he do this for you?

Hey Nolan,

Yes, sleep apnea can be very serious. It can cause injury, disability, and death. The word apnea actually means (In Greek) “Without breath”. And no, it is not just in kids at all. It can affect anyone, any age, weight, race, sex, etc.

There are three types of apnea, obstructive (I believe this is the one you have), central, and mixed. Of the three, obstructive is the most common. However, in all three, people with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times during the night and often for a minute or longer.

There are different ways to treat it, along with surgery. Most surgery’s are outpatient procedures. So Nolan, keep your appointments for the testing and such. Your Doctor will know after testing which option in your treatment will be best for you.

His DOT physical dr required a release from the sleep clinic. The sleep clinic refused to release him until he spends another night in the clinic and receives a CPAP machine. We have very good insurance and I see this as a subtle display of insurance abuse. They congratulated him on the efforts he has made to become more healthy but they refuse to acknowledge that he may be maintaining his MILD sleep apnea without any medical interference. Could I be wrong about the sleep clinic? Could he really need this contraption for his face? Can’t we control this on our own? He is sleeping fine now. Should he get a second opinion?

Definitely get a second opinion, even a third… most pulmonologists will not order a CPAP for MILD apnea, but an oxygen saturation of 89% is NOT MILD either. So, get another opinion.

Here is a crap load of background about me:

At one point I had done everything the doctor told me, including eliminating food from my diet that aggravates the condition, loosing weight until I was within the “healthy” parameters for my age/height/fitness, altered my sleep angle, and was on Nexium, Previcid, and Gaviscon. All of these actions helped the condition, but did not eliminate the symptoms. In fact, the symptoms were still so bad, that I gave up on the treatments.

I have been suffering from G.E.R.D. for my entire life, as I was born with a hiatus hernia. I also have hyperhydrochlorhydria, which aggravates the gastroesophageal reflux disease, as well as causing Gastritis and similar symptoms in the lower GI tract.

As well as the common symptoms of G.E.R.D., I have also been diagnosed with chronic bronchitis as a child, and then later diagnosed with asthma as an adult. (it is believed that G.E.R.D. can cause asthma)

The spasms in my stomach as well as the acid levels have been much higher lately due to some increased stress. These increases have led to Laryngopharyngeal reflux, which seems to be causing sleep apnea like symptoms.

Once I can aford health insurance, I’ll happily go through the same process where the physician and specialists tell me to change my diet, lose weight, take drugs, so on and so forth. Eventually, i will have exhausted all the non-surgical options, and I’ll probably opt for the surgery.

Acutally, yes, I do have discomfort in my ears, as well as (gag) a lot of wax!

I’ve actually had fifteen reoccuring ear infections, as well as some vertigo and swimmer’s ear. According to Wikipedia, this can be connected to the GERD and LPRD
I forgot to mention that I have the “lump” sensation associated with LPRD, as well as throat pain. I decided to add these details as others had commented that they have these symptoms. Although it is not relavent to my question, I feel these added details may help shed some light on their conditions.

I’m sorry. I don’t have the answer to you question but am very interested in seeing the replies you do get. I have a similar problem and nothing is helping completely. By the way, this may seem like a strange question, but do you ever get strange pains in your ear that you feel is connected to your GERD?

EDIT: Thank you for the info on the connection to ear problems. My doctor looked in my ear, said I have a bit of wax, but that it is not connected to the GERD and that it didn’t look like it should be painful. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I am going to look up your recommended site and go see another doctor with that info in hand. Thanks again and good luck with your problems.

EDIT: Hmmmmmm, what exactly is the “lump” sensation? Because I am constantly clearing my throat and sometimes when I am talking, my voice cuts out like my throat is closing up or something. It feels almost like there is a gob of hair or something in my throat. Then after I cough, bringing nothing up, I can talk again.

I am so sorry you are going through this. Depression is very hard. He needs some help. Can you go to a counselor and talk together if he needs someone there, or by him self? The american diabetes association has a page on depression. http://www.diabetes.org/type-2-diabetes/depression.jsp
there may be some helpful information there. The best thing you can do is just support him, and listen to his concerns. Let him know that you are there for him.
