Question by 525: My cousin continues to smoke around her 3 year old VERY sick child?
He has been through it all since birth.. he was diagnosed with sleep apnea and severe asthma since he was 6 months old.

I’m no doctor but shouldn’t she stop smoking in the house and around him? It makes me sick that she can’t stop for his sake and just this past winter he was hospitalized for pneumonia and bronchitis. She thinks it’s just the way it is and it has nothing to do with her. I really want to tell her off but she’s too hard headed.

He takes 2 inhalers a nite plus a ton of liquid meds to stop him from getting sicker. I can’t keep my mouth shut anymore! Ideas?

You have a right to be concerned about a family member, especially a baby. Your cousin is an assinine psycho. Slap her face and push her in the pool.

Question by jj: Oral surgery for a very small lower jaw on child? Detailed question!?
My daughter is 3 now and will be 4 at the end of August. A few months ago her dentist referred her to an ENT doctor and an oral surgeon when he noticed she has a very small lower jaw.

She was in for a sedation appointment to fill cavities when he noticed her lower jaw “falls over her throat” when she is sleeping (which can cause sleep apnea) and that it is very small.

He says if surgery is the answer, now is the time to do it. Otherwise we would have to wait until she is 17 or 18.
We saw the ENT first and he says nothing he can do- the oral surgeon needs to see her first.

Now as I wait for our first appointment (about 4 months since the dentist referred her) I have so many questions.
First, if she does need the surgery, is she going to be too old now- and will we have to wait until she is in her teenage years?

If she does need the surgery now- what can I expect? How long is the procedure, and more importantly about how long will it take for her to recover from it? What can I expect?

I realize I will get these answers once we get the appointment. I cannot find anything online about a young child having this surgery. I am just so anxious and worried for my daughter. She has a slight speech delay as well. Her dentist and speech pathologist both say this will help improve her speech along with other things.
Has anyone else had a young child go through this surgery before? Thanks in advance for the advice!

See an orthodontist, i think not to rush in to surgery for the jaws at this age she is still going to grow too much in her teen years

Question by jtodd.melody15: How do you deal with a very sick husband?
My husband and I are both 32 years old. Here is a list of his ailments that he has been diagnosed with in the past 2 1/2 years we have been together: prediabetic, hypothyroidism, sleep apnea, tremors, migraines, COPD, asthma, sciatica. Over the weekend we think he had a minor stroke and now his speech is impaired. We have 4 children ages 13, 7, 4 and 1. I love him but I am tired of taking care of him. I have not had a break in years, it is always something with him and I am starting to resent him. Help.
Just to revise this a little bit, don’t tell me I don’t love my husband. I do. We were just released from the hospital today. His family is tired of this and won’t help me and my family is doing all they can. He was electrocuted back in 2002 and has had nothing but problems since. I have been through more than my share of problems with him and have not felt resentment until this point. We have been together since high school. FYI, I have to have surgery that I have put off for over a year so I could take care of him. I cannot digest food correctly and myself am in a great amount of pain and am on a pain management program. (Onset from my pregnancy 2 years ago.) I have had to quit my job to stay home with him. I am currently loosing my home because his unemployment is not near enough to pay the bills. He pays child support and most of the unemployment goes to the ex wife for that. I have already sold jewelry and a vehicle to stay afloat.
And yes think he had a minor stroke the hospital said they couldn’t run an EEG on him until Monday so they sent us home this morning. All other tests came back negative.

Change his diet, start helping him with physical therapy and exercise.
Ask yourself, if the roles were reversed, would he do this for you?
I know I would.

Question by Nolan: Having a sleep test, Is sleep apnea very serious?
My doctor thinks that I might have constructive sleep apnea. My adenoids are blocking the passage way to my lungs. Has anyone ever had this kind of issue and how was it solved? Did you need surgery? I think this is usually more common with kids right? I’m having all my tests done within the next two weeks and going to see the doctor again, but wanted to hear some info first hand. 31 year old male, not overweight.

thank you,
Nolan

Hey Nolan,

Yes, sleep apnea can be very serious. It can cause injury, disability, and death. The word apnea actually means (In Greek) “Without breath”. And no, it is not just in kids at all. It can affect anyone, any age, weight, race, sex, etc.

There are three types of apnea, obstructive (I believe this is the one you have), central, and mixed. Of the three, obstructive is the most common. However, in all three, people with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times during the night and often for a minute or longer.

There are different ways to treat it, along with surgery. Most surgery’s are outpatient procedures. So Nolan, keep your appointments for the testing and such. Your Doctor will know after testing which option in your treatment will be best for you.

Hope all goes well, good luck!

Take care!

Question by Richard M: I have a very serious case of sleep apnea. I have gone thru 5 overnight tests?
After those 5 sleep studies Dr. Bond told me that I was untrearable. He had used MANY different masks, also using oxygen. I was told the average person with apnea stops breathing somewhere between 5 to 15 per hour. On my first test that number was 69, and has varied between 55 to 75 thru those 5 tests. DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A HIGHLY REGARDED SPECIALIST ON APNEA somewhere relatively close to Williamsburg, VA. My doctor, Thompson Bond, is well qualified, but I’m desperate to be able to get some sleep at night. If the present pattern holds, I probably won’t last the year out. THAT’S DESPERATE.
