How can I get used to a CPAP machine?

Question by : How can I get used to a CPAP machine?
I just started usuing a CPAP machine for sleep apnea and I can’t fall asleep. I have a nasal mask but don’t like the presure on my face. I just laid awake and laid awake until I gave up and came out to the computer. Would using a sleeping pill help? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Ask your doctor before you start using sleeping pills, But yeah, i would take a sleeping pill if i were you.

Sleep apnea might not encompass your entire medical condition. Have you also been checked for anemia or other nutrient deficiencies? Also, consider how many hours a night you sleep. If you use a c-pap, but still only sleep 5 hours a night you probably won’t see much improvement. I would have to know more specifics about whaty ou mean by I have no energy, but I hope this helps some.

I even used the cpap while taking Ambien and took it off when I was “asleep”.

UVPPP surgery is the best solutiuon. I had i done and sleep apnea is gone. CPAP was too much of a nuisance for me. One week of pain has cured me.

I had been using nocturnal oxygen alone for Obstructive sleep apnea.My doctor told me after the first month fo cpap to add oxygen with my cpap.But he didn’t tell me what the flow rate should be. I asked the doctor office 4 days ago but they have not called me back yet

They might not know this answer. Calling the company where you got your C-PAP machine would be more appropriate and they could give you the proper advice.

I sleep on my stomach and I have the nasal mask for my CPAP machine but I can’t get comfy at all and can’t fall asleep. I have never slept through the night with it and I am tired every day. I am wondering if I took a sleeping pill with it at night if that would help. I need to figure something out because the coffee is starting not to be effective with keeping me awake during the day. Any help or suggestions out there?

go back to the doctor that gave you the machine let him kno is not working for you..there are other options, u shouldnt be feeling this way and it shouldnt leave that mark on ur nose.tell him 2 teach how 2 use it…i use to work for a sleep doctor

my guess would be no-the sanitary protocol for the machine is pretty high (my guy uses one and I keep it clean and working for him ’cause its too much fuss0 besides, consider this it forces the ambient air into your lungs which means anything that gets on it/in it. what I’m saying is my common sense tells me its too risky and bothersome. i wouldn’t take it camping either.

It almost feels like I have asthma afterwards. It’s not severe, just uncomfortable and it goes away after a bit. I am just wondering if anyone has experienced this or would know anything about it.

I have the same effect, though not quite to your extent. I think it’s because the CPAP is making us breathe properly..i.e. using our lungs as we should use them instead of the shallow breathing we mostly do during sleep without the the CPAP, therefore our lungs are filling with air which they’re not normally used to, like a muscle, they’re used to an extent that’s they’re not used to, thus a little pain in that muscle. Most of us shallow breathe during the day. I would suggest that you see a doctor just to make sure that it’s not some underlying lung infection, better to be sure than sorry.

I am trying after years of avoiding the C-Pap machine for my sleep apnea, to get used to wearing it all night. But I still end up fighting with it and taking it off in the middle of the night. It’s been a month or so now, anybody have an idea or two???? Thanks

BTW, I am now using the nasal pillow and the head gear is called the Comfort Curve which for me has been far better so far than my old full face mask.

C-Pap is never easy to adjust to. Check with your doctor and see if you can take a sleep aid like nytol etc. Sometimes the only way to adjust is to be sleeping very soundly. After a time you’ll do better. Good luck.

My dad has one of these machines. For about 3 or 4 years, really. We both have sleep apnea but his is worse because he’s got a snoring problem. When he got his machine, he really did have to get used to it. He’d wake up coughing sometimes, even.
You can practice breathing with it sitting up, then laying down, get a rhythm.
ALWAYS make sure it’s cleaned, though I’m sure you know to do that.
You may not ever find a comfy way to breathe in it, but you can at least breathe right, and don’t freak out.
