Question by : my dad snores and has a lot of trouble sleeping.?
my dad snores and has a lot of trouble sleeping. I have done a little research and it looks like he has sleep apnea. The sleeping test is way to expensive and we don’t have the money. Is there any other way to get a test or one of those sleeping machines because he has been like this for years now and it is really getting to him. I want to help him. Is there another way? a cheaper test?

a cheaper option is go to a dentist and get him fitted for a TAP mouth guard. Basically, he will wear a mouth guard at night, the guard will bring his jaw a little forward making it that he cannot snore. This option is more comfortable and less restrictive, and works (in my opinion) better.

Question by Mommyof3 BGB: Having trouble breathing – looked like I swallowed a walnut??
I was 4 months pregnant when I started experience “sleep apnea” symptoms. I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping desperately for air. My son is 17 months now and it happens maybe 2xs/month. I live in Florida and we had some major smoke inhalation about 2 weeks ago, but I sat down to relax after a long day and felt like I wasnt getting enough oxygen, to the point I had my husband almost call 911. We went to the doctor that night and he gave me breathing treatments and my new doc has been getting tests for me left and right. Chest x-rays, thyroid ultrasound and breathing tests. I also have trouble swallowing with these episodes. Last night I was having some difficulty again and my friend looked over at me when I was giving a gurgling sound with it and she said it was like I swallowed a walnut! Right in the bottom of the neck- the empty part, above the chest bone, she said it was like a huge growth. I wasnt laying back just trying to breath normal, and Im a woman….

I noticed a lump growing in the same spot as you describe and after a thyroid ultrasound it was discovered I have thyroid nodules, i’m now waitng to see what the doctor wants to do next.. I don’t have any problems breathing, but it depends how the growth is growing. Don’t worry, if it is a nodules they are not life threateniing, and less than 5% of them can be cancerous, and that is usually only if you are really old. If they determine that is what it is you may be able to take a medication to shrink it, or you may need to have it out, but it is a sameday surgery. Take care, i’m sure everything will be okay.
I just wanted to add that 60% of woman have nodules and don’t know it, and they are pretty common especially after having a baby.

Question by loveoneanother: Having trouble getting to bed and stress is building?
I have been having trouble getting to bed before 2-3am each night. It’s not because I am not tired though. By the time I wake up it’s usually 12-1pm and it’s hard to get moving. My body aches and my eyes won’t work right. When I do sleep I feel like it’s a deep sleep and so wonderful that I don’t want to get up. I keep hitting the snooze and resetting the alarm to keep sleeping. Because of this I do not feel as though it is sleep apnea.
I am a full-time single mom, student(even in summer), and I’m trying to get it all done and live off student loans which sometimes makes me more stressed. I try to wake myself up early so that I’ll be tired at a decent time but it’s too painful and it makes me a mess so I have a hard time taking care of my children. My family is beginning to notice and have suggested a sleep study and I will do that but I feel like it’s something else. I sure DO NOT want to have to take drugs for this unless it was just for a few nights to get me on a sleep schedule.
BTW, When we went to a drier climate for a week I was able to get back to sleeping by 10pm and I was up before 9. We will be moving there in a year but until then, what do you suggest? Should I go in to get a sleep study done and ask about temporary meds? Has anyone else gone through this? It’s making me crazy:(

Do square breathing. Breathe in for 4 counts. Hold for 4 counts. Exhale for 4 counts. While doing this relax all the muscles in your body. Do this by tensing up the muscles for a few seconds then releasing it starting with your toes and working your way up. Keep doing this until you’re relaxed.
