Question by sheep torture in progress: Why is mis-diagnosis so common when treated by doctors in US?
Most doctors do not care to investigate the patient’s symptoms in big detail. They just try to give a “blanket term” diagnosis. I was awfully tired and exhausted so badly. After hearing my symptoms doctor tell me to eat vitamins. It didn’t help. Then he told me to exercise and that didn’t help too. When I kept pressing him more, he said I have chronic fatigue syndrome and said the only treatment is to rest and have positive attitude. The actual diagnosis was sleep apnea. It took 2 years to find this out after changing numerous doctors. One doctor finally told me to get sleep study and sleep apnea was diagnosed. It takes years to come up with correct diagnosis and many times this can be disastrous. A friend of mine died of stomach cancer at age 36. He was told he had IBS. When it was discovered that he actually had stomach cancer, it was too advanced and too late to save him.
so this means just because you have health insurance you really aren’t safe?

I had this happen back when I was 17. I was having extremely painful sensations in my lower abdomen. I kept going into Kaiser and they were sending me home with vicodins to treat my back spasms. Eventually, my skin turned yellow and they checked me in and found out that I had pancreatitis and gall stones that were trying to pass. If I didn’t seek treatment, I would have apparently died.

Doctors and medical systems are just as lazy as the rest of us. All you can really do is find a doctor that you trust. There are good doctors out there.

Question by Qwerty 123: How can this symptoms be treated? any vitamins? or natural medicine? any treatment?
When I go to sleep, sometimes I wake up and when I do wake up, I feel that i have no oxygen in my body, little dehydrated, catching for a breathe because I feel discomforted a lttle but. Sometimes I feel that i am little unconsious, not too dizzy though.. trying to get more oxygen by taking a deep breathe due to weird symptom.. I dont think it is sleep apnea because I am physically fit.. weight l40lbs and my height is 5 feet 6. if it is not sleep apnea? what would it be? feeling that I have no oxygen, taking a deep breathe to feel better? in my body? head? It occurs times to times these days? how can it be treated?

Well, actually it could be sleep apnea. Just because you are in shape, doesn’t mean you don’t have it. It is more common in overweight people but not always. Do you know if you snore?

You should check on it because it could possibly be something related to your heart. Please don’t freak out but it’s not exactly the norm to be waking up with trouble breathing.
Most likely it’s sleep apnea but don’t freak out. HOwever you need to take of this because in recent studies, sleep apnea has been related to heart disease.

Just go see a physician/PA/NP ok? Please don’t worry too much.

Just because your not overweight does not mean it is not possible to have sleep apnea. This is your oxygen supply here so get to a doc so they can do a sleep study on you and find out if there is some sort of diaphram malfunction, or lung issue….but it could very well be sleep apnea, its not just for overweight people.

you will need to maintain a healthy BMI (lose weight till you’re within your normal level), avoid a pillow, and use a CPAP machine. use a nasal rinse & see your doctor. have the DME company check the machine to ensure it’s working properly and/or that you’re using it properly.
