I think anyone whose child is having surgery obsesses and worries even if they haven’t had the experience of losing another child. I would talk to the doctor about the statistical risks and benefits, and then keep close to the top of my head both the fact that the risks are probably very small and that you’re doing it to really benefit your daughter. I’d probably get a second and maybe even third opinion on risks and benefits, too. After that, I’d just worry and obsess. Maybe schedule it as soon as possible to cut down on the stressful time?

Question by summerxsummer00: Can sleep apnea keep a person from going to bed at a certain scheduled time?
I was trying to make some dorm rules but my roomate says her sleep apnea prevents her from going to sleep before midnight…is there any way this is true. She does not snore, nor does she wear any masks or anything to help her breath better that may prevent her from falling asleep. Yet she insists that she can not get off of her computer at a certain time and just go to sleep because of her condition. Am i missing something or Is this even possible??

No. It disrupts how well she’ll sleep at night but it dont give a person insomnia. It’s just a breathing problem people have whiel they sleep. They stop breathing for a little bit in there sleep. and if people are really bad they have to wear a breathing thing to bed… SHE’S a liar.

Question by someoneoutthereishere: First time buying a CPAP machine, just diagnosed. Any recommendations?
Hello,
I was just diagnosed with sleep apnea after 2 sleep studies. The 2nd night I used a nasal cpap thing. So I go tomorrow to buy a machine and mask and start with the treatment.

My insurance usually pays 70% for most things, and I’m not sure if they are with this (they’re paying something, just not sure how much). When I talked to the place I’ll be buying from, they said my portion after insurance will be $ 433. So if they are paying 70% (again I don’t know, maybe it’s different with this) that would mean I’m getting almost $ 1,500 worth of equipment.

But from looking online at cpap machines, they tend to run even on the high end for about $ 8-900 at the most that I saw. And the masks were only at most $ 150 (that I saw). So is there something I’m missing? This seems ridiculously expensive.

Either way, does anyone have a good recommendation for the best machine and nasal “pillow” type mask? If money wasn’t an obstacle, what would be the “best”? I’m new to this, so thank you!

Most of the machines nowadays are very quiet and quite easily adjusted to. Make sure that you’re consulting a reputable dealer and take a test run before you commit to buy-cut it on in the store and gauge the noise level before you take it home.
As for nasal masks, most of my patients still have the old “pig nose” masks, the nasal pillows are the newest technology and it is all about personal preference. See if you can try them and get ready for a rough couple of days-your body has to adjust to this new therapy and the sleep that you’ll recoup will be worthwhile.
Good luck, I’m glad that they’ve discovered your problem.

Question by woreman: My 4 yr old just had her tonsils & adnoids taken out because of sleep apnea & sick ALL THE TIME, anyone else??
It has been 6 days now and she is still so uncomfortable from her surgery. The doctor said he opened her airway another 50% and that her adnoids were as big as her “kissing tonsils!” I will say, I have already noticed she sleeps with her mouth closed and is SO silent! I really am hoping our lives will begin to have some normalcy we have had very little sleep in 4 years. She has always hated to go to sleep, lay horizontal and been sick with every normal child sickness, but just to the MAX. For example she has had the 12 colds a year, 6 ear infections a year…etc…

My son had very similiar problems. And yes, he was very noisy when he slept and he was sick at least 1-2 weeks every month. He finally had his tonsils out when he was 6. What a relief, he had been on medication for a total of 20 weeks out of 30! Once he had the tonsils & adenoids out he wasn’t sick anymore!

Woo! Hoo! Woo Hoo!

He is so healthy now and so much more fun as well.
