Question by KAREN R: I wanted to know if I have sleep apnea why is it taking so long for the results?
When I woke up in the morning the lady that ran the test did not give me much detail except she said I will probably be back to sleep with cpap machine. So I called my doctors office today and they said they will call me with my results on Monday if I have sleep apnea like the lady that woke me up said I will come back to sleep with a cpap machine. If it’s that serious why are they taking there time with the results and what my next step is like taking another test and probably getting a cpap machine! I worried now every time I go to sleep since the test. Like maybe I might die in my sleep!

I can understand you fear. I just happened to have a sleep study done last night But when I asked the tech the results , because I have a medical background,he told me the results. Apparently I’m going to need at least CPAP also. But as with most readings in a sleep lab they are not severe enough that you should worry. You and I have been sleeping like this for a long time and have survived up till now.
So just be patient. The wheels of Medicine sometimes turn excruciatingly slow.
God bless.

Question by Jessica G: Taking beta blockers for SVT & I also have Sleep Apnea – Am I risk of Sudden Aryth Death Syndrome?
Please help. I have SVT and I am currently awaiting a further appointment following my test result for sleep apnea.
Can you die of Sudden Arythmic Death Syndrome or Sleep Apnea whilst taking Beta Blockers? Am I at risk?

I take a mild 1.25 mg of bisoprolol beta blocker, as any more than that reduces my blood pressure. (Symptoms of my SVT are very infrequent on medication. Cardiologist recommended ablation butI’m too scared. He stated that SVT is nothing to worry about but the internet suggests otherwise )
I will truly appreciate your advice please!
I am 30, slim and have a healthy lifestyle

Hi I too have SVT and mild sleep apnea, had an ablation done to stop the misdirected signals. You need to stop worrying about it. Since you are seen by cardiologist he or she is following your medical condition. Its called sudden cardiac death syndrome. Your taking beta blockers will help control the SVT’s. Are you watching your sodium/salt intake?? Are you on a breathing machine, CPAP, while sleeping(for sleep apnea)? How is your potassium level? Are you staying hydrated?

I JUST went through the same problem you’re going through right now (and not being a doctor), I can only tell you what worked for me.

I stopped taking sleep-aid pills (over the counter and prescription). (BEFORE you do this, you should tell your doctor. It’s important.) Next, I drew up a sleep log. I wrote down (everyday for a couple weeks) exactly what I did/drank/ate/watched on television within four hours of bedtime. I know this sounds ridiculous, but it REALLY helped me understand things I was doing to sabotage my sleep. Next, I took the sleep log and took out things that were keeping me awake. For example, my log went from this:

8pm – have a few drinks
9pm – go for a jog
10pm – play video games and eat popcorn
11pm – go to bed

… to this:

6pm – go for a jog
7pm – dinner/drinks
8pm – play video games
9pm – take a bath
10pm – read a book
11pm – go to bed

I’ve spoken with about a half dozen doctors about my insomnia (which was very severe), and they all say the same things:
- Don’t eat or drink alcohol within 3 hours of bedtime. Also, cut way back on soda or anything that has caffeine. Try to not have anything like that after noon.
- Daily exercise HELPS make you sleepy (so definitely do it!), but do NOT do it within 4 hours of bedtime (otherwise, it will give you an energy BOOST).
- Do something that is calming starting two hours before bed. These activities could include reading, writing, watching a calming movie/show, knitting, taking a shower/bath…
- When you’re doing these pre-bedtime activities, turn the lights down a little.
- Drink tea with lavender and/or chamomile.
- Make sure your room is slightly cool, NOT HOT.
- Make sure your room is dark and quiet. Cover up windows and remove ticking clocks. Most important of all, turn your alarm clock away from you. Watching the time go by does NOT help sleep-seekers. Neither does the bright, neon light coming from the clock.
- Make sure your uncomfortable mattress isn’t the problem.
- Have the SAME routine EVERY DAY. Your body will get used to the routine so that every time you take a bath, for instance, it knows it’s time for bed.
- Don’t watch TV at bedtime. The light from the TV disrupts your sleeping.
- Have a partner? Orgasms help. Don’t have a partner? Orgasms still help.

If you do all these things and are not seeing results (give it a few weeks), take the sleep log to a doctor. Tell them what you’ve done. They might suggest more/different medication, or they might send you to someone who specializes in cognitive behavior therapy. (CBT is psychological in nature and will touch on these “sleep hygiene” techniques like I’ve mentioned along with many, many other things I haven’t delved into like unrealistic sleep expectations and misconceptions about insomnia.)

I’m sorry this turned into such a book of an answer, but I hope it helps! Best wishes for good dreams!

Question by randominpurple: Husband with medical issues not taking care of himself?
My husband has Sleep Apnea and depression. Both have caused weight gain and both are made worse by weight gain. Every doctor he has seen in the past year has told him to get gastric-bypass (weightloss) surgery. He is non compliant with his sleep apnea treatment and is not only retaining fluid but one of his calves is swollen as big as his thigh. Because of the depression and lack of restfull sleep at night he is tired all the time. He will nod off during a conversation. The excess fluid and weight are taking a toll on his knees. He is barely able to walk and uses the scooter stores provide if we have to go out shopping. To top it off he has lost his job and insurance. How do I get him to comply. I can’t go to the appointments he has to attend prior to surgery for him. I am doubly frustrated because coincidentally, my mother had similar health issues. She was non compliant and died. We have two young children. Do I push him or do I just watch him die?

Ask the home care company if they can put a low pressure alarm on it. When you take it off you will loose pressure.
