Question by edkolover: To parents with babies who have taken aminophylline…?
My premature son has been taking aminophylline for apnea and bradycardia for several weeks now, and it’s almost time for him to stop. I am a little nervouse about it, but my main question is, if your baby has taken it, did you notice a difference in their sleep patterns, as the medication is a central nervous system stimulant.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Question by Blithm: Has anyone out there taken Tegretol and suffered from sleep paralysis as a result??
I suffered with horrible sleep paralysis while taking Tegretol (Carbemazapine) and now that I don’t take Tegretol I suffer with a special kind of sleep apnea (central apnea) that is usually brought on by brain trauma or drugs/medication. I am trying to determine if they are all connected….the Tegretol, Sleep paralysis and central apnea. Any serious reply would be greatly appreciated.

Dear “tubby”
I was on tegretol at one point but soon after I started to develop these strange spasms and odd muscle spasms during the night. Shortly thereafter I started to get seizures. They are not epilepsy or gran mal. They are now being called “stress seizures”. But to me it is way too coincidental that this started when I was on Tegretol. I dont have difinitive answers, I really wish I did. I hate to see someone else suffering. I woudl recommend you do a search for adverse effects to Tegretol. This is a good start here and I really do hope you get some answers. I am sorry I couldn’t offer you more help or better hard proof. I’m sorry that you are going through this. I sincerely hope that you feel better soon and get the best treatment possible for your apnea. One thing to keep in mind is a sleep study.

Question by woreman: My 4 yr old just had her tonsils & adnoids taken out because of sleep apnea & sick ALL THE TIME, anyone else??
It has been 6 days now and she is still so uncomfortable from her surgery. The doctor said he opened her airway another 50% and that her adnoids were as big as her “kissing tonsils!” I will say, I have already noticed she sleeps with her mouth closed and is SO silent! I really am hoping our lives will begin to have some normalcy we have had very little sleep in 4 years. She has always hated to go to sleep, lay horizontal and been sick with every normal child sickness, but just to the MAX. For example she has had the 12 colds a year, 6 ear infections a year…etc…

My son had very similiar problems. And yes, he was very noisy when he slept and he was sick at least 1-2 weeks every month. He finally had his tonsils out when he was 6. What a relief, he had been on medication for a total of 20 weeks out of 30! Once he had the tonsils & adenoids out he wasn’t sick anymore!

Woo! Hoo! Woo Hoo!

He is so healthy now and so much more fun as well.
