Question by CJ: Are you suffering from any kind of sleep disorder?
If so, how are your daily experiences? Does your family understand and support you?
I have Hypersomnia, which means basically no matter how much sleep I get, I’m still sleepy. I can (and have) slept for 15 hours straight, and still wake up sleepy like I haven’t slept in days.
It’s hard because friends and family don’t know anything about sleep disorders, so they just look at it as “laziness”, and don’t understand I have a real problem.
It’s good to know I’m not alone. I have had numerous sleep studies, and I have been on 4 different medications, including Provigil. The medications either do nothing, or the side effects of the medicine is worst than the condition itself. This really sucks because I know it’s something I have to deal with for the rest of my life.
And YES, waking up in the morning is pure h*ll, and no one understands that. I’m late getting my kids to school and getting to work 98% of the time!

Yes. I can completely relate. I’m 25 and ever since 13 have suffered from severe fatigue. My family has always thought I was just lazy because I would sleep for 12 or more hours straight and still feel like I had been hit by a mac truck because I was so tired. I would lay down maybe 2 hours later and take a 3 hour nap. Getting up for work in the morning is a hellish ordeal. I enjoy my job but it’s simply near impossible for me to get out of bed. It’s hell.
My family never used to understand, but after nearly 13 years of this, numerous tests and a sleep study, they are starting to come around.
My doctors first thought it was depression. Anti depressants did nothing. They then thought it could be something in my blood such as thyroid or anemia. My bloodwork came back normal.
Finally last fall I was referred to a sleep specialist and had a sleep study. Results all came back normal. I don’t have narcolepsy or sleep apnea. Therefore my diagnosis is idiopathic hypersomnia. That means doctors am aware that I am chronically exhausted and that there is probably an underlying problem… but they cannot discover a reason why at the current time.
I am now on stimulants to help keep me awake. SOme days they help…some days they do nothing. I still have severe trouble waking up in the mornings and still sleep way too much but at least tehre is some help.
If you haven’t already, I would ask about a sleep study or possibly being put on a drug such as provigil or adderall.
Good luck and know that you aren’t alone. You aren’t lazy. Trust me, I know.

Lately, I can’t fall asleep, I’ll lay in bed for hours with the lights off, trying to sleep. When/if I do finally fall asleep, it’s a very restless sleep and I wake up easily or I have terrifying dreams that wake me up. I also get terrible headaches in my sleep.
Do you know what this might be? And is it serious enough that I should see a doctor? If I don’t need a doctor, what are some home-made things that I could do?
All answers are GREATLY appreciated!
