Question by : I have had strange “hiccups” for 15 years, could they be Tourettes Syndrome? How does TS manifest?
I dehydrated and had reversible liver damage 15 years ago. It was a very traumatic ordeal. It took about two weeks to recover, and when I did I started “hiccuping”. I may have between 50-200 per day, less if I do not eat, and more if I eat carbohydrates and sugars. I itch a lot, however, not in the same places and not in any order. In doing some research on the subject I remember reading that there has to be several different tics to be considered Tourettes.
I have seen two neurologists and neither would diagnose it. My brother was diagnosed with TS at about 8 y/o.
I also have Sleep Apnea and Hypopnea, while sleeping only (as far as I know). My pulmonologist seems to think that the hiccups are caused by acid reflux. I take 2 Tums twice a day and so far have done one two week treatment of Nexium, without any relief. I had surgery for a deviated septum, after which, the hiccups seemed to have lessened slightly.
I will be having another nose and throat surgery in the next few months. The Dr. would like to see less episodes still. I went from 80 apneas to 20 each night. I wonder if the increased oxygen has been helpful in reducing the hiccups or if it has been psychosomatic.
I do not think that these are really hiccups, however, I do not have a better description for them other than an annoying “tic”. Can a traumatic event suddenly cause Tourettes?

Question by MikhailRandt: Strange sensations falling asleep?
I’m wondering if anyone can shed some light on a strange disturbance I’ve been experiencing when going to sleep. When I first go to bed and lying there while awake after 5 or 10 mins I sometimes get a strange jolt sensation in my chest area. It appears to last only 1-3 seconds in duration resulting at times with my head jerking up off my pillow. Sometimes a sensation similar to apnea or anaphylactic yet I am not asleep. In only a few seconds it has passed and I appear to be fine with normal breathing. Some nights it happens only once or twice, some nights multiple times . At times it happens so fast it’s difficult to articulate what it was. Once asleep I’ve experienced no difficulties with no recollection of ever being awoken by anything. Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas what it might be? I’d greatly appreciate any insight. Thanks

This happens to me a lot, and it is scary! I’ve went to the doctor and had many tests run because I’ve been sick- some of which included an echocardiogram and an ekg, and my heart is healthy. (I’m 18.) So it may not be something wrong with your heart.
My doctor told me that mine is probably caused from anxiety. She said you can have anxiety and not even realize it because you incorporate the stress youhave and the day feels normal. She told me that the feelings in my chest at night are probably caused from being relaxed and that pent up stress being relieved.
Hope it helps. If not, go get a check up! =]

Right as I start to fade off into a deep sleep (I think this would be rem?) I’ll hear a sudden very loud bang that will startle and wake me. It always sounds like a door slamming or something running into the wall really hard. This has been happening for years now. But, i’ll still sometimes get up to check what it is. Please don’t say it is ghosts or something like that. This happens where ever I am. Hotels, family, home, etc. I just wonder if anyone else experience’s this?
