I am in college and I have huge tonsils that basically cause me to have sleep apnea. I had a sleep study and I stopped breathing and woke up 12 times within 5 hours and never went into stage 4 sleep. I don’t sleep well at all, and when I wake up I feel like I didn’t get any sleep. I have slept through my 8 am class for 4 weeks now! I’m blessed that it doesn’t have an attendance requirement! But it is still a problem. My doctor prescribed me Lunesta which is helping a little bit but still not getting me out of bed in the morning. I am literally so tired I can’t move and feel like a dead person when I wake up. Any suggestions?

and by the way I go to bed around 9:30-10 every night so im not staying up late….

forgot to add this, i am getting my tonsils out on november 24th… what can i do until then to get adequate rest and be able to get up in the morning?

basically what you should do is get them removed. this is what happened to me. it took me 2 weeks to recover so you would have to think about that.

. It is a little bit price-y but hey if you know of someone who can’t sleep and you they have that sleep apnea and are at risk for even death then the price should be covered by insurance I think. Any one know if it is covered by insurance? What do you think of the new device to stop snoring? Sounds like a good idea to me, if anyone has gets more information please tell me. Thanks

Oh gosh thanks so much for making me laugh today. It is funny don’t you think? I like the one that said she was afraid she might actually kill him… and where it says they both snore and even the ones where they say sleeping in another room is cheaper. Oh I just pictured all of us talking about it and laughing our socks off. To hilarious

nope, as many thin people as fat people have sleep apnea… it is not related to weight.

I stop breathing during the beginning stages of sleep and wake up ia a panic, often jumping out of bed gasping for air. It started 28 years ago and only happened about once every couple of months. Now, it happens daily, even when I try to nap. The only was I can drift off to sleep peacefully is with either, Ambien, Lunesta or a BENZO (like Valium or Lorazepam). The last week it is getting even worse. I get a throbbing small pain near either my right temple area, sometimes either temple area or on the top/side middle of my head. I have been to two sleep studies, but the last one was 2 years ago and that night I didn’t have an event. However, I was diagnosed with having mild OSA. The sleep doctor put me on a CPAP machine (which I bought) and it only made the condition worse. He tried every titration and still was bad. I don’t know if I have mixed sleep apnea. I had a neurological study done and it turned up negative. I have read about Central or Mixed Sleep Apnea and in my opinion, I might be suffering from it. It seems that my brain-control center for going to sleep have gone haywire. I have read about taking Medroxyprogestorne (Provera, Cycrin, Amen), Acetazolamide (Diamox). Theophylline (Theo-Dur, Respbid, Slo-Bid, Theo-24, Theolair, Uniphyl, Slo-Phyllin), traicyclic antidepressants and selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s). I am currently taking Surmontil 100 mg. per day and and Lamictal 125 mg. Please help me if you have any ideas or suggestions. I feel that my body can’t handle the stress of this much longer.

You’re obviously on meds from the doctor. Talk to him and let him know how you feel. Ask him to recommend a Specialist that you can see for a second opinion. There is a chance the combination of drugs could be causing the problems. Make sure the doctor knows all of the over the counter medications and supplements you are taking too.

I feel like I cant breathe out of my nose right alot of the time so I bought some Breathe Right strips. They help me feel like I can breathe better but I still sleep with my mouth open. I snore no matter what position Im in or any adjustments to pillows but I mainly only snore at my boyfriends house. Im pretty sure I dont have sleep apnea because I dont stop breathing. Just really loud snoring. Does anyone know anything that could help me keep my mouth shut while sleeping or the best products to stop snoring. Ive read about chin straps, mouth guards, sprays, etc. But does anyone know if they really work??

You need to find out WHY you’re snoring first, before you can fix it. A lot of different things cause snoring. (sleep apnea isn’t one of them- it’s only a symptom that accompanies it). Do you have large tonsils? Sinus problems? Severe allergies? You can go to the Dr. to get any of these diagnosed really easily. You can try things like Flonase which is a steroid nasal spray if the problems lies in your nasal passages. (especially if it’s mostly at a different house- my first thought would be an allergy problem). But figuring out the cause is the best way to find the cure.

My husband snores so loud I can’t stand it! I end up waking up to his snoring in the middle of the night and have to go and sleep on the couch. Even then sometimes I can still hear him so I have to turn on the tv to drown him out! He is not overweight, so I know it’s not sleep apnea or anything. Short of putting a pillow over his face,(LOL)how do I deal with the snoring?

Bring him to the ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat Specialist) for evaluation. Snoring can actually be dangerous if he also has apnea (stops breathing) which can occur in people that are average weight, too!

A sleep study will probably be recommended. There are different possible causes with different medical treatments and procedures that can help. The only way to know for sure is to get an accurate diagnosis.

My roommate snores, and it’s very annoying. Her snoring isn’t always regular either, sometimes it get’s VERY loud all of a sudden like a “CAH” sound, as if she’s hacking something up or gasping for air. (I asked her if she had sleep apnea, but she doesn’t know.) Are there any remedies or products that can help her snoring? Do those snore sprays or mouth washes work? I don’t think the nasal strips would work because she said she doesn’t breathe through her nose. (I think she consciously can, but not when she’s asleep.) For a while I made her sleep with an extra pillow to keep her head higher, and it worked a little.

Help! It bothers me so much I want to throw things at her!

Get an anti-snoring pillow. It keeps the person sleeping on their side so they won’t snore.

You can also have her tie a tennis ball to back of night clothes which will stop her from sleeping on her back.

It does sound like she has sleep apnea. She ought to get a referral from a pulmonary MD to go for overnight sleep test.

Buy ear plugs for yourself or get one of those white noise machines.

If she’s congested she can try Benedryl or Zyrtec (at night).

We have been on a search to find out why my husband has non stop migraines…how about a sleep disorder.. He sure does try to suck in the ceiling through his nose by snoring?
