just wanted to know what sort of work was involved with having an 11 month old baby with hypotonia (low muscle tone) which they think has only affected her from her neck up to her throat,nose and ears and also sleep apnea&#8230;. she has a ct scan booked and is being admitted to hospital in a few days!!! also getting bloods tested for about 12 different things&#8230;just wanted to know what other mothers/fathers went through so i know what to expect in the next few weeks/months/years and dont completely break down&#8230;.<br />

<p><i>Answer by no one</i><br/>Sleep apnea is very, very common&#8230; don&#8217;t panic. Most likely they will institute something called &#8220;cpap&#8221; or &#8220;bipap&#8221; for your child if they determine she does definitely have it. Its essentially a breathing device that you wear on your face ( either nose, mouth or both) that provides a pressure (like a string wind) of air to your childs airway while she sleeps, to prevent the soft tissues in her throat from collapsing and causing apnea. While it sounds terrifying, its actually incredibly common in both children and adults. Do some research on &#8220;CPAP&#8221; and &#8220;BIPAP&#8221; and ask your physician what your child is definitely being diagnosed with and what interventions will be necessary. Ask lots and lots of questions until you feel you have e solid understanding of what your childs needs will be. But don&#8217;t panic&#8230;. sleep apnea is super common and can be treated. <p>I haven&#8217;t had any personal experience with such things but&#8230;.<br />
If you really are concerned what it is all about and would like more information on what to expect I would recommend talking to your local baby clinic as they should be able to give you all the information that you require and offer you some suggestions on how to deal with everything.</p>

I am a 14 year old female, and I have sleep problems.<br />
Not in falling asleep, it&#8217;s not Insomnia.<br />
I&#8217;ve woken up in the night coughing, and I&#8217;ve heard that can be symptom.<br />
I&#8217;m always fatigued in the day.<br />
I have been told I am very loud at night, snoring, breathing and talking.<br />
Can Sleep Apnea develop, or is it something you are born with? Is there treatment?<br />
Any info is much appreciated.</p>

<p><i>Answer by veritatum dilexi</i><br/>It could be apnea.  Try sleeping on your side from now on and see what happens.  Someone has to record (video and audio) you sleeping and show it to your doctor.</p>
<p>Apnea usually runs in families.  It could be a lot of different problems, too many to go into here and too complicated to describe.</p>
<p>Record; show doctor; get relief.</p>

ok, so two last night i went to bed, like normal my digital watch casted a shadow over my head and onto the wall, my bed is surrounded by 2 walls and noises can get pretty loud, well i closed my eyes and fell alseep then i woke up in the same room, i felt EXTREMELY tired, i got a bit worried so i tried to move my leg and realized it was hard, to move if it was even moving at all, well that it sort of interrupted something on my brain that caused me to think i was not alone in the room, i felt weightless and did not see any lights or anyone, well i was still in my room and my eyes were a bit blurry then i felt sort of compressed at the chest and heard this very smooth sharp but mechanical sound, then i realized that i could move my leg again! so i turn the lights on was not sure if i needed to take some sleeping pills or see a doctor, another time in my sleep  i felt so tired that i wanted to wake up but was immobilized (day nap with my family in the house) i really wanted to fall asleep again but i felt my heart giving out, every time i wanted to sleep my heart would sort of beat slower and slower, i got extremely scared so i desperately tried to wiggle,crouch, move my limbs till i finally did. wow, so what i was trying to ask was if it was normal for a 16 year old boy to suffer from this type of heart condition or illusion???</p>

i was diagnosed with sleep apnea not to long ago i got my CPAP and every thing but sometimes it dosnt seem to help. I have to get up at 5am to get ready for school but i always seem to fall asleep in the shower which is causeing me to miss my bus. Dose any one no a way i could stay up and have more energy in the morning?</p>

<p><i>Answer by Yogi</i><br/>I also have the CPAP have had it now for about a year now. I never knew how sleep deprived I was. I have set it at 3.0 it helps from getting ear infection and clogged sinus. But each has his or her own setting  that fits them. You might just need a few good nights of sleep also speak with the sleep people. I go in once a month and can change out certain portions of the gear. I clean it once a week. I have also found that i needed a nose pad so the bridge of my nose would not get so sore. I have taken the time every morning and make a daily log and print it out and take it in the clinic. It is sort of a diary of what is going on. They will ask just like going to the doctor and like most you have this blank that comes over you. If I have question or put them down I can turn that in and they can read over it and then ask or just keep it which they do and add it to my record.</p>
<p>Set some kind of a sleep pattern, you already have a set time of getting up but one has to get strict with oneself. Diet my help out some, working out during the day so you are ready for bed, shower and get all relaxed. But you over all best thing would speak with those at the sleep clinic get some up to date information from them.</p>

He has the best of intentions, and really wants this to work out, but as soon as he goes into a deep sleep, he takes his mask off.  I tell him to put it back on, and he gets confused or irritated.  We&#8217;ve been doing this 4-5 times a night, and we are both getting quite frustrated.  How do I help him keep his mask on at night????</p>

<p><i>Answer by tommyc</i><br/>Strap it or tape the mask down? Maybe strap his hands down for a few days while sleeping until he gets used to not taking it off and then see if he doesn&#8217;t take it off when given the opportunity?</p>

Im 17 now, and this all started when i was 14. I started to sleep late to stay up with friends on the phone or chat because it was awesome at the time. At first it was harmless, but over the years I could never shake off the habit. Im 17 now and a senior at high school and what worked when i was 14 does not work now. Im overburdened with homework/projects/college applications and i simply cant do them because im too tired. I feel tired all through the day and come home after school to sleep for 3-4 hours, after i sleep i do homework/project/study for tests/ apply to college or whatever it is and cant sleep until 1/2 am. I wake up for school at 5:45 everyday and the cycle continues. No matter how much i try to keep myself up after school and do homework then go to sleep soon after, my brain just doesnt work. I need to sleep then wake up then sleep again so i never get a full 7/8 hours of sleep only breaks of sleep. Its been happening for years now and its seriously affecting me and i feel too tired to do anything, i just want to lay down and sleep all the time. Help me in any way? do i have a serious/dangerous problem? how can i fix it so i just sleep at night?</p>

<p><i>Answer by .</i><br/>I suffered with insomnia for a long time too. Have you tried 5HTP (herbal)? It works amazingly for me, but different people get different results. Seeing as you&#8217;re under 18 you might want to check with a naturopath before self medicating</p>

Actually, I know the standard answers. Get a good routine going, go to  bed at same hour and up at same hour every day, good diet, exercise, relaxation, blah blah blah.  The trouble is I am now 73 and this has gone on for 11 years since my wife died. I live alone and have none of the good habits because I am always in the same rut and unable to change or, if I do change, it is for about two or three days and then I stay up to 3 AM and sleep to noon. Today, I am so mad. I stayed up ALL night and now it is sunny and 9:30 AM. I am not sleepy after being up for 22 hours, but know I need some sleep. I am afraid this is another lost day.      I&#8217;ve been to the &#8220;sleep specialists&#8221; taken numerous sleep tests, got machine for sleep apnea, meds for sleeping and anxiety and depression. So why am I still up all night? Worst of all I don&#8217;t do anything productive in those night hours when I am awake. My best working times are, like most people, during the day.</p>

<p><i>Answer by selfirst</i><br/>I am sorry to hear about your wife. It is kind of hard to answer your question because you have been to all the specialist and they have giving you everything from medicine to some form of treatment and it hasn&#8217;t helped.</p>
<p>I suffer with insomnia at times my doctor has giving me sleeping pills but I don&#8217;t take them to strong. What I found to help me on those really stressful sleepless days is: tea, getting a book to read, and prayer.</p>
<p>Also you might want to try a natural sleep aid (Melatonin) here are some facts about it, you can find it at your local vitamin or nutrition store.</p>
<p>Melatonin is a popular remedy to help people fall asleep when the sleep/wake cycle has been disturbed, such as in shift workers or people who with jet lag.</p>
<p>Melatonin is a hormone found naturally in the body. The pineal gland in the brain makes serotonin which is then converted into melatonin at night when exposure to light decreases.</p>
<p>Melatonin is typically taken about 30 minutes before the desired bedtime. Some experts caution that melatonin should not be used by people with depression, schizophrenia, autoimmune diseases, and other serious illness. Pregnant and nursing women should not use melatonin.</p>

Im 11 weeks pregnant with twins, my dr sent me for a sleep study because I am so tired and have not been sleeping well. They said that when i get into a deep sleep my oxygen level drops in half. Yjey put a c pap on me for the second half of the test and still didnt see much improvment. Anyone eles had this? Really worried about the babies. I have been so stressed like they need anymore stress.<br />

Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by loud snoring and brief, involuntary breathing pauses during sleep. (The Greek word apnea means &#8220;want of breath.&#8221;)</p>
<p>Sleep apnea sufferers may briefly stop breathing and then wake with a gasp, start, or snort as many as a hundred times a night or more. People with sleep apnea rarely remember these episodes in the morning, although they may wonder why they feel so tired all the time.</p>
<p>Obesity is a major risk factor for sleep apnea, and some experts believe that pregnancy may also make you more susceptible, particularly in the third trimester. The heavier you are to begin with and the more weight you gain during pregnancy, the more likely you are to have trouble breathing at night because of the extra tissue in your neck and throat.</p>
<p>Other factors that make you more likely to snore during pregnancy, such as swollen nasal passages, may also put you at a higher risk for sleep apnea. Higher levels of estrogen during pregnancy contribute to swelling in the mucous membranes lining the nose and can even cause you to make more mucus. Also, the amount of blood in your body increases and your blood vessels expand during pregnancy, which can lead to swollen nasal membranes as well.<br />
What you can do about it<br />
If your partner notices that you&#8217;re snoring a lot and making periodic snorting or gasping sounds in your sleep, be sure to mention it to your doctor or midwife so you can be evaluated for sleep apnea.</p>
<p>When you periodically stop breathing, the amount of oxygen in your blood drops temporarily. If left untreated, sleep apnea can take a toll on your health, and some research suggests it may affect your baby&#8217;s growth as well. Sleep apnea is also linked to high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disorders. And feeling tired during the day increases your risk of falling asleep at work, while you&#8217;re driving, or while you&#8217;re caring for your other children.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re diagnosed with sleep apnea, you may be given a special mouth guard to wear at night to keep your airway open. If the apnea is severe, your doctor may have you wear a mask that&#8217;s hooked up to a machine that provides a steady flow of air while you sleep to help keep you breathing normally. Most people are amazed by how much better they feel during the day soon after they begin using this device at night.</p>
