First off, you really need to see an ear, nose throat doctor. it could be the cause of your sleep apnea. Fixing a deviated septum may help to open the nasal passages. A crooked septum can make breathing difficult. The condition also can lead to snoring and sleep apnea. The cpap is not going to help much.

Question by ron197192064: What is deviated septum, and what are symptoms? How to treat it?
is this what causes snoring or sleep apnea? is surgery only option and what does the surgery actually do, remove something?

it is a condition where the septum blocks one side of the nose. surgery is probably the answer. you can try the nasal strips and see a difference in your breathing which should help snoring. good luck.

Question by Sherlee: Anyone have surgery for deviated septum and uvula?
My brother has a deviated septum and is also having his uvula (sp) removed. I think it has something to do with sleep apnea.

If you had the surgery, did you recover quickly, any problems?

My mom had surgery for a deviated septum. She’s much happier she got it done, let me tell you. Um, lets see. I think the only really big problem she had was the anesthesia. Honestly. lol It was an out patient surgery, she went home with us shortly after it and slept a lot the first day or two. Maybe 3. Other than that, she recovered fine. Your brother will just be really out of it for a couple days and will appreciate any help you give him.

Question by stiffkittens: Deviated Septum Surgery and Sleep Apnea?
Hi, I had surgery for a deviated septum on March 3rd of this year and about a month and a half later on April 17th I was able to breathe out my right nostril, the one that was blocked by my septum. I can breathe so well, it is amazing. I have sleep apnea and a CPAP, but have never been able to use the CPAP. I know that I can breathe through my nose I can use the CPAP now, the problems is that I know I still breathe through my mouth a lot when I sleep because I still wake up sweating like I’m choking in the morning. I know I’ve been thrashing around at night. My question is if I still don’t use the CPAP because I’ve never been able too and have tried all types of masks(nose pillows, full face, mouth and nose) will I get better sleep maybe in a couple of weeks or so now that my nose is better? Basically will it improve? I have a big “sleep debt”. I can feel it. I know that with a CPAP or without it would take a while to improve because of the “sleep debt”. It wouldn’t be overnight.

Sleep Apnea is a pretty serious condition, so I would recommend staying with the machine, however there are some more ways to help you breath easier through your nose.

Talk to your doctor about getting your adenoids removed. That is a clump of skin at the back of your nose that your don’t need. I like to think of it as the appendix of your nose. It’s removal also has other benefits like like better odds against ear infections.

It is quite rare that your adenoids are in the way becuase they usually shrink during puberty, but it’s worth a shot.

Please let me know how it goes.

Question by moondrop000: Sleep Apnea-has anyone had their deviated septum fixed or their turbinates trimmed?
Has it helped your sleep apnea? Has it helped post-nasal drip or throat problems? Was it worth it?

Yes, i’ve had both done about a month ago. although i didn’t have apnea, I did have PND and throat problems. I also had problems w/ breathing through my nose. I feel as if i can breathe much better now, the PND is better, as is my throat. I must tell you though, there is alot of pain for the first 24 hrs. after the oper. if they use( packing ) inside the nostrils. Ask your Dr. beforehand!Once the packing is removed the following day you’ll feel about 80% better. Good Luck!
