Question by Stephanie Murphy: my pcp dosent think sleep apnea is a good reason for weight loss surgery. what do i do?

Hi, Stephanie!

It depends how overweight you are:

- in you have an uncontrollable weight gain.
- a large neck (>16 inches around in women, >17″ around in men)
- if your Body Mass Index is above 30 (obesity)

then you should consider that obesity is the first cause in prevalence of sleep apnea.

Before choosing surgery, you should try to loose weight. Weight loss surgery is only for people who have no other option, because they are in danger to die.

Weight loss surgery is a danger procedure, and you should think twice before using it.

I hope it helps!

Question by pfpattyfrench: If you go to bed early, is there any reason why someone with sleep apnea cannot get up at 6am to go to work.?
I scheduled my employee at 7am and he says that he cannot possibly get up and do his job, even though he has 2 days off prior. I find this to be just an excuse not to work this shift. Any advice?

If he has sleep apnea he needs to be on a CPAP machine so that he can get proper rest. If he is not using a machine, then yeah, he probably has a hard time getting up, but no excuse. He will die if he doesn’t get the problem taken care of. I have sleep apnea, but I use CPAP and there are no sleep disturbances any longer. Someone cannot use a medical condition that has a readily available treatment as an excuse. That would be like a waiter saying he couldn’t wait tables because he has a splinter in his foot. The condition has a treatment and not only can the treatment help him get some sleep, it will also prolong his life. Besides that, even BEFORE I got CPAP I got to work on time.

My CPAP is not making the severe sleepiness go away. I get so sleepy I trip over things and am like being drunk. Yes-the sleep apnea was severe.
