Question by ﺕ SB22 ټ: What do these symptoms point to?
My husband (38) has an appointment with a Doc next week & plans to talk about his symptoms with him of course, but I was just wondering if any of you can give us an idea of what he could be experiencing?

We’re going to ask about Migraines & sleep apnea, but there’s more involved, his symptoms are:
*Severe headaches, (YEARS) never Dx’d with migraines, they come 2-5 x’s a week now
*Sleep disturbances, (Months) Harder time falling to sleep & wakes up constantly from gasping for air, used to wake up with a choking feeling but now its more gasping for air.
*Pain in his stomach, (Months) He had pretty bad side aches/pains that we think has to do with his digestion, he’s tried different vitamins & minerals & enzymes, but it seems to make it worse, & sometimes it wakes him up at night too
*Heart racing, (days) He’ll wake up gasping for air & his heart races terribly, & has an “odd” shaky feeling along with it all.

Last night he even got up at 2am & checked online for symptoms of heart-attack & stroke because he was worried about what he was experiencing, but didn’t find matching symptoms.

His headaches are the main reason he’s seeing the doctor, he had an MRI Friday too. He gets all kinds of headaches though, some he feels are caused by too much sugar late at night, some shoot sharp pains in parts of his head, some neuralgia in the back of his head, mostly stabbing excruciating pain in his forehead, MOST of them happen early in the morning & he wakes up in horrible pain.

We’re wondering if these are symptoms of sleep apnea, or migraines, or anything else that they can all be related?

Like I said, we’re talking to the doctor, but we’d appreciate answers, especially from your self-experiences & not just guessing at what it could be, we’ve already been doing that. =]

Thanks for your help!

Ask your neurologist to do a sleep study in order to find out if it is sleep apnea or just migranes. The doctor will probably also prescribe medication to reduce the migranes overall pain. Also look into botox for migranes, its supposed to work very well, but only for up to a year.

Question by Ak: At what point is it that a sleeping disorder turns into insomnia?
Just wondering because I’ve always had trouble sleeping (can’t get to sleep till about 2 / 3 in the morning usually, no matter what time I had to wake up or how tired I am and often can get to sleep all night for several days at a time). What is insomnia and when does this become insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which a person experiences poor sleep or has trouble sleeping.

Psychophysiological is the most common type of insomnia and concerns the association of going to bed with emotions that prevent sleep.

Individuals with this problem react to psychologically stressful situations with bodily tension or other physical complains such as upset stomach and headache. This disorder tends to feed off of itself in the sense that the individual becomes more and more focused on getting a “good night of sleep” and thus creates more anxiety, making it even harder to fall asleep.

Try relaxing a half hour or more before the time that you wish to go to sleep. Don’t use your bed for activities like tv, work, or anything else. Try eating foods high in calcium and magnesium at least 3-4 hours before bed to enduce sleepiness. There are tons of tips out there. www.sleepydreams.com is a great place for info.

Question by Mr Haun: Is the inability to breathe upon waking up, during sleep paralysis normal? or does this point to Sleep Apnea?
Throughout my life and even nowdays, but especially when I was 8-14, I have sleep paralysis but often times when I get this, I also cannot breathe and It is not until I panic that I wake up. I also note that at about age 19 when I began regularly using marijuana, the occurance, or at least realization, of sleep paralysis and not being able to breath while waking up has dramatically ceased and is very rare now.
