Question by jj: Oral surgery for a very small lower jaw on child? Detailed question!?
My daughter is 3 now and will be 4 at the end of August. A few months ago her dentist referred her to an ENT doctor and an oral surgeon when he noticed she has a very small lower jaw.

She was in for a sedation appointment to fill cavities when he noticed her lower jaw “falls over her throat” when she is sleeping (which can cause sleep apnea) and that it is very small.

He says if surgery is the answer, now is the time to do it. Otherwise we would have to wait until she is 17 or 18.
We saw the ENT first and he says nothing he can do- the oral surgeon needs to see her first.

Now as I wait for our first appointment (about 4 months since the dentist referred her) I have so many questions.
First, if she does need the surgery, is she going to be too old now- and will we have to wait until she is in her teenage years?

If she does need the surgery now- what can I expect? How long is the procedure, and more importantly about how long will it take for her to recover from it? What can I expect?

I realize I will get these answers once we get the appointment. I cannot find anything online about a young child having this surgery. I am just so anxious and worried for my daughter. She has a slight speech delay as well. Her dentist and speech pathologist both say this will help improve her speech along with other things.
Has anyone else had a young child go through this surgery before? Thanks in advance for the advice!

See an orthodontist, i think not to rush in to surgery for the jaws at this age she is still going to grow too much in her teen years

Question by Atheist Mantis: Obstructive Sleep Apnea: CPAP Machines vs. Oral Appliance Therapy?
My father has Obstructive Sleep Apnea and will be going in for a sleep study soon so I am looking at CPAP Machines and doing research.

My father came across an add for this “Oral Appliance Therapy” thing and I am wondering if you have any info on if it works or if it is a scam.

I’m looking at the CPAP Machines and if you could share your stories with me, I would greatly appreciate it!

The first thing to do is let your dad get his polysomnogram done and find the results of how severe his sleep apnea is.

CPAP is the gold standard for the treatment of sleep apnea, because it can be titrated or individually set on the optimum pressure to preserve your father’s upper airways at night. The brand of CPAP machine isn’t as important as having a quality titration done to arrive at the proper pressure for him, and finding the right mask type that makes him the most comfortable and likely to wear the system consistently all night, every night.

Oral devices are for very mild cases of sleep apnea. However, I would be very wary of any devices that are mail-order/internet. These devices are usually prescribed and fitted by a dentist or ENT specially trained in their use. Any device that is ‘plug and play’ without being fitted is a scam.

Question by lupita: do you have to have perfect teeth to get a oral appliance for sleep apnea?

No.
You need to have a sleep study done. If you have done that then talk to your doc about which sleep apnea device is best.

I had a wisdom tooth pulled Friday, and it is now Sunday night. Is it safe to use my CPAP machine yet for my sleep apnea? I don’t want to cause a dry socket or anything.
