Question by Dezi: How much does it cost to fix sleep apnea in dogs?
Our 160lb Mastiff has sleep apnea, I couldn’t sleep and she was sleeping behind my legs and she stopped breathing for a good minute, I had to vigorously shake her in order to help her breath. I Read up that surgery is the only option for her. Does anyone have an idea of how much it costs? I know, I will call our vet, but I am looking for ideas. Ty in advance
She is not overweight, it isn’t humid or hot… She does snore very loud. She isn’t really active because she needs a hip replacement. ;(

Hell – I’d never heard of it.

I haven’t got a clue, but appreciate how worrying that would be for you.

Do hope you are able to get the operation done and she is fine.

Question by singing_angel_of_the_night: How much weight could I lose in 1 year, and how do I encourage myself to just finally do it?
I am 25 years old, and back in 2002, I was at a healthy weight of about 150 (I’m 5′8″). In the end of 2002, I met who is now my husband and we have had 4 children. I am now around 320 pounds. Most people say “Oh well, you’ve had 4 children, of course that’s why you’ve gained weight”..and my response to them is always “No, I used the excuse of being pregnant to eat whatever I wanted, that’s why I am this way.”. Well, the thing is now it’s worse than ever, I am always wanting something sweet, everyday. It’s like I am addicted to junk food and I’m having such a hard time trying to quit it. Soda and Junk – that’s basically what my everyday eating habits consist of. Depression may play a part in my eating habits, but I’m not depressed like “omg I wanna kill myself” depressed, more like a “I wish I could just get my old self back, and keep the husband and kids”…I’ve decided that no matter what starting the first of the year I am going to lose weight – I have to…I don’t have diabetes, or high blood pressure, but it’s only a matter of time. I already have sleep apnea. So my question is – how do I shake myself of always putting it off, making excuses and what are some good ways to break the junk eating habit – how can I motivate myself to just finally get up and do the darn thing? Yes I know, my kids and husband should be enough motivation, it’s just hard. If I walk my back hurts, i’m out of breath (ontop of that, Im a smoker, and that’s another thing I intend to let go of strike midnight on new years). Realistically, how much weight could someone my size loose in 1 year, just knocking out the soda, candy and junk – going to water, fruits and veggies and steamed and baked foods? Anyone have a success story or any tips?

Please, no rude comments, I beat myself up enough, I don’t need it from anyone else.

Thanks!

Losing weight and getting fitter is really quite simple. All you have to do is a few simple things. Firstly, clear your fridge of fatty junk foods. If there’s no temptation, you cannot fall. Secondly, stock up on watermelon and other fruits. Watermelon is excellent because it clears out your digestive system of toxins and waste, leaving you feeling and being healthier. Next, begin exercising every day. Do not go too hard. If running, don’t go fast or uphill, unless you want bulky muscle. A steady pace each day for a minimum of 30 minutes will allow you to shed fat and tone your body. Set a day each week when you each junk food, but try not to go overboard and ruin the work of every other day. Drink plenty of water, often when you think you are hungry, you are actually thirsty. If you are getting cravings, have a glass of water, wait 5 minutes, and then see if you still want food. This usually gets rid of those nasty afternoon hunger pangs for me!

Good luck, and I hope you get the results you want!!

Question by MortalGuardian: What is wrong with me- why am I struggling with college so much?
I wish I could be brief in detail, but my situation demands a lot of explanation. I am a 35 year old married man from Georgia. I am currently attending college full time in order to attain a degree in education. I want to teach second grade one day. I love school and I love learning. But I am struggling with a number of different issues.

To start with, I have little time for leisure or recreation. This really confuses me deeply, because a lot of students and even professors seem to have more free time than I do. I am not even working at all right now. I am just going to school FT. Yet I know of many students who work PT or even FT and also attend college. Some of those students even have families, children, and hobbies. So this leads me to believe that something is terribly wrong with me.

I need to reveal this part- I have a pretty severe case of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder). I normally take my meds in the morning, and they evidently have a soporific affect on me throughout the entire day. I require a lot more sleep than normal- I need about nine or ten hours of sleep to function properly the next day. I have a theory about this. I am obese, so I may have sleep apnea. I may not be getting enough rest at night since I am so overweight, and this may partially explain why I am so often tired in the daytime.

I think I may have problems with time management skills. I also may have poor study habits that are not effective. But other than these things, I cannot figure out why it is that I struggle to have time for myself and my wife. She is very frustrated with me because I have so little time to dedicate to her and spend with her. She needs me right now, because she is depressed (something which I can relate to all too well). I see other people working, attending school, and traveling, etc- but they don’t seem to have this problem of time that I do. Is my mental illness one of the factors working against me? Why and how is it working against me? Is the fact that I am a perfectionist also a problem? What is the solution? Is there something wrong with me?

Question by eatme: How much weight did you lose after starting to use CPAP treatment?
FOr people who were over weight or obese, how much, if any, weight were you able to lose after starting CPAP treatment for Sleep Apnea?

Best answer:

Answer by James
CPAP works by regulating air pressure into the lungs. You should not expect to lose much, if any weight, by using a CPAP. Buuuuut, you should be able to sleep through the night better! Maybe you’ll have more energy during the day and be better able to exercise to help lose weight.

Question by Christi C: How do you know if doctors are doing enough for your child if there is so much information for them to review?
My daughter’s lung collapsed at birth and after three weeks was released from the NICU with no medications or machines. She was sounding very congested and her Dr. finally referred her to an ENT. That Dr. found that her adnoids were growing down into her throat which caused apnea. She is too young for surgery but her apnea monitor sounds often. A sleep study has confirmed that her saturation (blood oxygen) dropped below 70 % at times and put her on oxygen at home when she sleeps which is quite the challenge. Since then she has also been diagnosed with PDA and ASD Heart diseases; Anemia (even with iron suppliments); high platelet count; pulmonary hypertension. I’m at my witts end! I feel that I’m seeing all these different doctors and no one is putting the information together. They are all puzzled at how healthy she looks to have all of these things wrong. Is anyone in a simular situation or could shed some light on what could be going on? She is so precious. God bless!
