Question by Tracy J: Is this considered any kind of sleep disorder, or is there anything I can do?
I have always had this problem my entire life. When I was a little kid I always slept until at least 11am, when all other kids I know wake up at 6am. But, I’m 29 years old now. I have always had a hard time waking up in the mornings (it’s not just the typical teenager not wanting to get up thing). I can go to bed at 8pm or midnight, and still can’t get enough sleep. Currently the alarm goes off at 3am (I usually don’t get out of bed until 4:20, but that’s only because my husband pulls me out). But, even when I worked a lot later, I still had this same problem. Plus, if I wake up in the middle of the night and actually get out of bed for 2 minutes (thank god it doesn’t happen often), my body has to pretty much start the entire sleep cycle over again. So, that night I’ll need twice as much sleep. My husband has started to just leave me on the couch if I fall asleep. Does anyone else have this same exact problem? Please help, it’s the biggest pet peeve about myself and my husband is really starting to get angry that I can’t get up in the mornings, but I can’t even hear the alarm until an hour later.

Ask your husband if you snore. You may need to be evaluated for sleep apnea. A good physical at your doctor is a pretty good idea as well. A good multivitamin especially B vitamins are good. Even at 29 you may have a decreased hormone level which can contribute to your need for lots of sleep. I had a low testosterone level and prior to finding this out I had similar sleep problems you have described. Go get a physical and request that your doctor draw labs that check your hormone levels. I had to suggest this to my endocrinologist and he was sure I didn’t have low testosterone until the results proved otherwise. With testosterone injections every 2 weeks I improved.

Question by RS353: What kind of sleep disorder could this be?
Four consecutive nights in a row now I’ve lost significant sleep to violent twitches and flailing around. It’s not mere tossing and turning where I just keep rolling over in the same spot. Every few seconds (seemingly 7-15s) I have this uncontrollable spasm that has lifted me from laying dead asleep on my back to sitting straight up within a second or so. My boyfriend thought I was having seizures. It’s not RLS. It can’t be. Even as I sit now I feel all this tension in my upper shoulders to heave around. I’ve taken muscle relaxers, stopped caffeine before bedtime….I don’t know what to do. It’s beginning to take a toll on my work and school performance. I’m 20 and work part time and go to school. That’s nothing in particular that millions suffer stress from…why is it overwhelming me so badly?
Hey hey hey…..good point. I had a nasty infection over the weekend that I was having to take tons of Penicillin and Hydracodon…Hydr…heavy duty pain killers for. A couple times I’d take the pills at 2 or 3 hours rather than the 4 or 5 hours I was supposed to wait. I had some similar reactions. I didn’t think about that.

Question by Tess P: Does this sound like some kind of sleep disorder?
Hi,

So I have a lot of trouble with my sleep schedule. I am 21 years old, a student and a part time employee. I never get tired until really late at night, like 3 or 4 am. Once i fall asleep, i typically sleep until 3 or 4 the next day, which just perpetuates the cycle. If i have something to wake up for the next day, as I usually do, I will still not be able to fall asleep until the middle of the night, and ultimately wind up with only between 3-6 hours of sleep. I will wake up, and be exhausted all day, but once i get home from school or work, i stop being so exhausted and have no desire to go to bed.

My sleep schedule this week was as follows:
Sunday Night-Monday: Went to bed at 4am, woke up at 8:30am monday for work.
Monday-Tuesday: Fell asleep at 3:30am, woke up at 3:30pm tuesday
Tuesday-Wednesday: Fell asleep at 6:30am, woke up at 5pm
Wednesday-Thursday: Fell asleep at 6:30am woke up at 9am for work

Thursday Night, Tonight, I was exhausted after a 9 hour day on 2 and a half hours of sleep. I have school tomorrow as well, so I got into bed at 10:30 to go to sleep. I fell asleep immediately but woke up wide awake and alert at 1:00am. whats wrong with me? I am sick of living like this.
I have always been a night owl, but my parents said that they were the same way at my age, but eventually they began to get tired earlier and wake up earlier. I am just concerned because I am taking sleep aids almost every night to help me fall asleep and they are no longer working.

A couple things. Did this come on suddenly? If so, you may have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and you’re not alone because I have it too. CFS can be due to any number of things, and it took a couple years of tests and trial and error for me to find out what mine was due to, and we’re still not sure. Staying away from sleeping aids would be a good idea, and going to a doctor who practices functional medicine, as I do, would be best in order to find out what might be ailing you. Sometimes people just have different circadian rhythms and are not really ill at all.

Question by ChrisK: Does a BiPAP require a different kind of mask than a CPAP?
I’m using a BiPAP (not CPAP) for sleep apnea. I use a full mask that covers my nose and mouth. Does the BiPAP require a different kind of mask than a CPAP? Or will any mask work on both BiPAPs and CPAPs?

Thanks!

I have the same problem. my body feels kind of like it is full of energy, kind of like a tingly feeling but more extreme than when your foot falls asleep and you dont have the tickling sensation. i looked these symptoms up on the e-net and closest thing i found was that its the begining of an OBE. outer body expierience. i know that sounds wierd but if you look it up those symptoms are related. once when this happend i got passed the paralized sensation i got up from bed and started to open the door. and i felt stupid for doing so for some reason and then some one was trying to open the door and i was holding the handle so it wouldnt open but i wasn’t really scared for some reason. after that i was instantly back in my bed like i just woke up and was dreaming it but i thought it was real. i havn’t found a answer to this by medical terms yet.
