All the symptoms of sleep apnea match my dads sleeping habits.Like sometimes while hes sleeping and snoring really loudly(its so annoying) he stops breathing and i think hes like gonna die or something? My dad has had a stroke and he has blurred vision and he couldnt speak normally and he STILL thought he was fine…hes very stubborn and wont do anything till its too late.Plus im only 12 and if anyone can convince him to go to the doctor it wouldnt be me.Im really scared cause i heard sleep apnea can result to heart failure and thats how my grandfather(my dads father) died. I really care about my dad but noone even all of his family and friends put together can convince him to go to the doctor! Please help me!

Question by EA: Advice on a health issue?
I am an 18 year male, about 6′2″ and 185 pounds. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism two years ago and have been on both synthroid and armor thyroid, which I am currently taking. The reason that I saw the doctor in the first place was because I was always tired and had no energy to do anything. My blood test showed my TSH being very close to 0 so I got on the thyroid hormone therapy and my levels are now back to normal. Now my problem is that I am still completely exhausted everyday and I have to take a vitamin/energy drink every morning just to wake myself up. Usually about once or twice every month I get to where I cant eat anything for about two days and I feel like puking and I usually dry-heave. I have been looking on the internet and have many symptoms of sleep apnea. My doctor has no idea and referred me to an endocrinologist but I cannot get in anywhere until the middle of October. I realize that it is the job of the professionals to diagnose and treat my problems but I need some advice to get me through the next couple of months. If anybody else has had these problems or knows someone that does it would be great to hear from you. If you do not have a serious answer please do not answer this because this is a serious problem.

I have sleep apnea and use the cpap machine. To diagnose it requires two overnight stays at the center. The first to determine if you have it and how severe. The second to determine the setting needed for your machine. I don’t feel that sleep apnea is the cause of all of the symptoms you are describing.

Question by nwafanusa1: How expensive is the gastric bypass surgery (bariatric) if you don’t have health insurance to pay for it?
I am 39 years old and very obese and have diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, and high triglycerides. My doctor at the VA Hospital wants them to give me gastric bypass surgery but they no longer do it at the VA Hospital. Is there any VA Hospitals that perform gastric bypass surgeries (regular one) or how much money do you need to have it done on your own? Please help me. Thank You.

I don’t know where you are from but call the patient representative at the VA and ask them about other VA hospitals, where they are and if they do the gastric bypass. Try a county hospital in your area (they do have programs) you will probably have to jump thru hoops but it will be worth it.
As for as how much it cost it varies I would say $ 15000 up to $ 30000. Also, go to the VA web site

Question by nikki r: What health problems are needed in order to qualify for gastric bypass surgery?
What types of health problems are needed to qualify to have gastric bypass surgery? Do you only qualify if you have severe health problems caused by this or could you qualify if you have smaller health problems like knee arthritis & breathing problems? Most of my family is obese and have heart disease, sleep apnea. Would they take that into consideration? My sister had gastric bypass surgery with a starting weight at 208 and is down to 128. I don’t think she had any medical problems due to her obesity.

Usually you have to have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40 or more to qualify for gastric bypass. If you have a BMI of over 35, sometimes you can qualify if you have significant co-morbidities such as diabetes or sleep apnea. First and foremost, “they” look at how morbid obesity is affecting you, however, your family history may be taken into account, if close relatives are morbidly obese and have health problems relating to obesity.

Question by ♥livingdeadgirl♥: what is causing this onset of health issues?
why do 1 in 3 people have acid refulx?what is causing restless legs syndrom?sleep apnea?asthma?extreme childhood obesity?extreme anxiety disorders?

don’t we need to know what is CAUSING all of these problems?not just research treatments or cures. years ago you never heard of these things, all these ailments that plague us … in the old days, not everyone suffered from heartburn etc – is it the genetically altered foods we consume? what is going on,i would like your opinion on this and any ideas you may have on the subject ……

It’s likely a combination of several factors, but I wonder if all of the pharmaceutical advertisements don’t send people to the doctor’s for things they might have ignored otherwise.
An unhealthy diet can cause acid reflux and certainly childhood obesity.
I totally agree about the importance of finding causes for all of the problems. There seems to be a trend of unhealthy lifestyle choices followed by trips to the doctor to try to undo the negative consequences. It makes much more sense to try to make healthy choices on a daily basis.
