Question by : Am I the only one this happens to? Waking up @ night feeling like I can’t breath or that I’m dying in my sleep?
I was wondering if I’m the only one who has had this problem. Basically, soon after I fall asleep… anywhere from right after I doze off up until 1-2 hours I will wake up in a daze feeling as if my lungs are tight and I can’t move any air until after I wake up fully. It doesn’t happen past an hour or 2 of being asleep.
This will happen almost every night for a while, and then it will go away completely and won’t happen at all for months at a time, only to start up again happening almost every night after many months have gone by.
I had a sleep test done in the hospital and nothing happened that night but I was told that my test was normal and I don’t even have sleep apnea.

Question by newlife276: Do you have to treat Sleep Apnea? What happens if you don’t?
I was just diagnosed with Severe Sleep Apnea. My insurance only covers 80% of the cost of a CPAP machine after a 0 deductible. There is no way I can afford that right now. I see my Dr. next week to get the full study results & I will talk to him then but I want to know now, what happens if you leave sleep apnea untreated? How many people REALLY die from it? All the sleep tech told me was that my oxygen level dropped to 65% & I had no REM sleep, I slept 90% of 4 1/2 hrs…

Yes, it is very serious and can definitely be fatal. Even if you don’t die in your sleep, it can cause other diseases that can shorten your lifespan significantly (ie: heart disease, Type II diabetes, dementia, etc). Severe sleep apnea also causes loss of brain cells, which manifests as loss of memory and an inability to concentrate.

what happened to you before you got the cpap ordered, nothing really. sleep apnea is generally a discomfort at night, interfering with a good nights sleep. who ever supplied your equipment should have a respiratory therapist on staff to asnwer your concerns and guide you by their company policy.
