Question by ddlg42: When was Sleep Apnea first recognized as an actual sickness or disability?
When was Sleep Apnea first recognized as an actual sickness or disability? I was in the military from ‘73-’77 and had all the symptoms but I was young and was never concerned with the effects. Once out of the military, symptoms persisted and was eventually told by the VA and civilian doctors tha I had OSA and have been on a CPAP for over 15 years now. Even after a LAUPP and G-BAT(VA) surgery I still have OSA and still have to use the CPAP. I am trying to service connect my OSA. Please help.

Here is a link that may help….http://www.talkaboutsleep.com/sleep-disorders/archives/history.htmnk

It is hard to say exactly when it was recognized. Sleep and sleep disorders have been studied for decades. I think somewhere around the 1960’s is when it was most officially recognized. 1968 was when we got official rules for recording polysomnography.

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by someoneoutthereishere: First time buying a CPAP machine, just diagnosed. Any recommendations?
Hello,
I was just diagnosed with sleep apnea after 2 sleep studies. The 2nd night I used a nasal cpap thing. So I go tomorrow to buy a machine and mask and start with the treatment.

My insurance usually pays 70% for most things, and I’m not sure if they are with this (they’re paying something, just not sure how much). When I talked to the place I’ll be buying from, they said my portion after insurance will be $ 433. So if they are paying 70% (again I don’t know, maybe it’s different with this) that would mean I’m getting almost $ 1,500 worth of equipment.

But from looking online at cpap machines, they tend to run even on the high end for about $ 8-900 at the most that I saw. And the masks were only at most $ 150 (that I saw). So is there something I’m missing? This seems ridiculously expensive.

Either way, does anyone have a good recommendation for the best machine and nasal “pillow” type mask? If money wasn’t an obstacle, what would be the “best”? I’m new to this, so thank you!

Most of the machines nowadays are very quiet and quite easily adjusted to. Make sure that you’re consulting a reputable dealer and take a test run before you commit to buy-cut it on in the store and gauge the noise level before you take it home.
As for nasal masks, most of my patients still have the old “pig nose” masks, the nasal pillows are the newest technology and it is all about personal preference. See if you can try them and get ready for a rough couple of days-your body has to adjust to this new therapy and the sleep that you’ll recoup will be worthwhile.
Good luck, I’m glad that they’ve discovered your problem.

It feels like the longer I stay awake the more I think and when I’m thinking I just can’t sleep. it’s like a circul the longer I’m up the more reason I can’t sleep.. as I said laying here in bed really trying hard to fall a sleep but the harder I do the less of a chance I am able too,, I know mum says a hot glass of milk always helps her..I know I am tired but I don’t feel tired though I feel wierd, like a really loud truck has gone passed my ear, what do I do

I started MMT almost a week ago and have not been able to sleep for more than 45min – 1hr at a time. I wake up all through the night and can’t go back to sleep for about 30min or so. Yesterday I did take a 1 and 1/2 hr nap. But that’s been about it. I am really really tired. Should this go away soon?
