Question by Dianna B: How do I get insurance for lap band or bypass surgery if my insurance company has turned me down.?
My insurance company will not cover lap band surgery for me (or gastric bypass for that matter). I have been overweight for years, have sleep apnea, sore knees, and the necessary BMI to qualify. Even the hospital that would do the surgery has told me that they turned them down. Paying for it myself would be out of the question. My company has been using this insurance company for years and years – I do not see them switching carriers in the near future. Is there any way I can get this surgery done? I feel the pros far outweigh the cons.

Many insurance policies will not cover that procedure because it is not medically necessary. They consider it the same as cosmetic surgery. You can contact other insurance companies and ask them.

Question by stiffkittens: Anyone improve their Sleep Apnea by sitting up when sleeping instead of lying down?
I’ve had no success using a CPAP for Sleep Apnea. On my last sleep study the tech I had some Central Sleep Apneas which I didn’t have on my sleep study the year before. My sleep doctor wouldn’t give me meds for Central Sleep Apnea or but me on a BiPaP machine because they don’t deal with Central Sleep Apnea. I know when I’m laying down I don’t breathe much but when I’m sitting up it’s fine, I’m wondering if this could carry over into my sleep.
Sorry for spelling errors. Sleep deprivation rears it’s ugly head.

Why don’t you put the head of your bed up on some risers so that you are no longer lying flat and won’t get back problems from sleeping in a recliner. That 6-8 inch incline may be all that you need to be able to breathe easier. Losing weight is your best bet for getting relief from your symptoms and your physician has probably already told you this. Start a walking program – it is the easiest to accomplish – start with short distances at a slow pace and over several weeks, gradually increase your speed and distance until you are walking 30-45 minutes a day at a brisk pace. You should be sweating when you reach the increased speed of walking. If you don’t, you aren’t walking fast enough. You would be surprised how much improved your breathing can become with only a 10 pound weight loss!

Question by ABC123: Is a symptom of sleep apnea itching… down there at night?
I get up a lot to pee at night. I wake up gasping for air. I snore until I wake up gasping for air. I’m exhausted daily…. but I also seem to get itchy down there every night too.. is that a sleep apnea symptom???

Best answer:

Answer by parkermbg
as embarrassing as it is to admit,…..yup!

you need to get a sleep study done, get a CPAP machine that will help you with the apnea at night. you’ll be well rested-have energybonanza, be alert all day, not have to get up a gajillion times each night running to the rest room pee, and the itchies go away!!!

also, once you have a CPAP machine, you get a discount on your electric bill anywhere in the u.s.

p.s. most health insurances cover this but you may have to get a referral from your normal doctor first

Question by Donavyn Elliott: Can Sleep Apnea Be Passed Down?
When my dad was about 19, he got punched in a park and mugged. this messed up his nose, and he now suffers from sleep apnea, after he was 25 he had me. Could this affect me in anyway?

Best answer:

Answer by J B
Snoring can run in families due to nose structures. Being overweight also contributes to sleep apnea so in order for you to avoid this factor, maintain a normal weight. The way the inside of your nose is made you have no control over.
