She has severe difficulty breathing even a few steps. I do mean severe difficulty breathing. She has also been given oxygen therapy via a nasal cannula. Unfortunately she becomes so terribly out of breath that she breathes through her mouth so the oxygen is of no real benefit. She becomes so weak that she nearly collapses.

What are the repercussions of not taking these nebulizer treatments or using the CPAP machine?

She is unable to sleep in her bed because if she lays down she cannot breathe. She has not been honest with her doctor about any of this. He evidently believes she is taking her breathing treatments and using her CPAP machine.

She has severe pitting edema as well, for which she has been prescribed lasix with no significant relief.

I anticipate that she will have an episode one day of respiratory failure. I am needless to say at my wits end trying to figure out just what to do.

I do not think she understands just how significant these treatments are and the repercussions that this could all cause. Any suggestions?
I should have stated that she does indeed have a BiPap. She flatly refuses to use the BiPap machine. She does not believe that she has Sleep Apnea. She feels that everyone that goes for a sleep study is automatically diagnosed with sleep apnea. I have tried to talk to her on numerous occasions about this to no avail.

She uses the oxygen but it really isn’t doing her any good considering she is unable to close her mouth to breath through the nasal cannula.

I tried once again to convince her of the benefits of using the nebulizer yesterday but she is adamant about not using it either.

I am contemplating contacting her physician without her knowledge to see if perhaps he could intervene and get her to understand the severity of her condition. Thanks for your responses. It helps to know that I am not on the wrong track with this and that my suspicions are accurate.

I’m sorry to be so blunt, but quite plainly she will die without treatment. She’s an adult, so as long as she is of sound mind, she is legally able to refuse treatments. As long as she understands that by not following the doctors’ orders she will die, there’s not much you can do. She may just need her doctor to really sit down and explain everything to her again. Strap it or tape the mask down? Maybe strap his hands down for a few days while sleeping until he gets used to not taking it off and then see if he doesn’t take it off when given the opportunity?

Talk to his doctor, I’m sure they’ve heard everything they can probably help.

Maybe he’s a little dizzy from the lack of oxygen from that arterial blockage going to the brain!! You already know he needs to get in and be taken care of. Have they checked the other arteries that lead to the heart? Blockages don’t just stay in one place. He would need an MRI or whatever REAL test is done, not just the office checks that don’t show everything. Those sort of things can slip by if you don’t have a dedicated doctor. My dad went in and found out he had severe blockage in the arteries around the heart. He also had diabetes and did not know his sugar numbers were very high. He would put up with the pains in the chest and just take the medication that would help alleviate them as they happened. His doctor did not do what he needed to. If your husband does not want to do anything about this, is is in danger. You can’t force him, but hopefully he cares about everyone and wants to be around.

Find a really good heart doctor to start with and have his arteries really checked. If he is not taking this seriously, then he probably won’t change his diet, but he needs to cut down on all sugar and STARCHES, carbohydrates. The diabetic diet is a very healthy diet, but people who simply want to be healthy should eat a lot of raw/fresh fruits and vegetables. That should not be only considered a diet for sick people. He needs to stop eating all foods that cause inflammation (carbohyrates). I hope he takes this seriously and you have a doctor who won’t put up with lack of cooperation. If not, shop around until you find one – and very soon!

You should try and find a sleep clinic nearby you or find a clinic where you can have a CPAP titration done to determine the best fitting mask and CPAP pressure for you. It’s important to make sure you are correctly and effectively treating your apnea. You can ask your doctor if there is a sleep center or clinic he can refer you to for a study.

Potentially. Mental fatigue is often caused by lack of class IV sleep. You don’t heal well without the deepest stage of sleep. So if you are able to progress into the deeper stages of sleep with the cpap, you will get better. If something else is causing your mental fatigue, you may need to consider other avenues of treatment.

Most of the time, drooling during sleep means that you are breathing through your mouth instead of your nose. Maybe the c-pap machine causes your nose to clog up a little. There is a chin strap that can be worn to keep the mouth closed, which forces you to breathe through your nose, but it doesn’t work if you have a severely stuffy nose. You could try the chin strap or taking sudafed at bedtime to see if that helps.

i believe 17 is for the inspiratory pressure. (IPAP) but i think that’s a little too high. usually the expiratory pressure (EPAP) is the lower number. it’s like PEEP for obstructive sleep apnea. is that what the doctor ordered?

Once you start getting a better night sleep. You’ll need to get used to wearing the CPAP mask. It will force your airway to stay open, but it takes some getting used to. Once you do, and you start sleeping at night, the daytime drowsiness will go away.
