Question by <3<3XOXO<3<3: Could this be Sleep Apnea?
I am a 14 year old female, and I have sleep problems.
Not in falling asleep, it’s not Insomnia.
I’ve woken up in the night coughing, and I’ve heard that can be symptom.
I’m always fatigued in the day.
I have been told I am very loud at night, snoring, breathing and talking.
Can Sleep Apnea develop, or is it something you are born with? Is there treatment?
Any info is much appreciated.
Best answer:
Answer by veritatum dilexi It could be apnea. Try sleeping on your side from now on and see what happens. Someone has to record (video and audio) you sleeping and show it to your doctor.
Apnea usually runs in families. It could be a lot of different problems, too many to go into here and too complicated to describe.
Record; show doctor; get relief.

Question by : Could this just be Sleep Apnea?
Within the last two weeks, I have been feeling real confused and hazy, and tired, even when I get 8 hours of sleep. I am an active 16 year old male. My father does have sleep apnea, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I had it. I had blood work tested on a lot stuff, and it all came back normal. This feeling of being tired, hazy, and confused will go away, and then come back again. If I become more active, will it also help to make it go away? I seem to be sitting in the house a lot more also.

Answer by Helen M It could be sleep apnea. Being tired and confused would definitely fit. Do you have headaches when you wake up? You should probably see a sleep specialist and consider having a sleep study.

Question by : I have had strange “hiccups” for 15 years, could they be Tourettes Syndrome? How does TS manifest?
I dehydrated and had reversible liver damage 15 years ago. It was a very traumatic ordeal. It took about two weeks to recover, and when I did I started “hiccuping”. I may have between 50-200 per day, less if I do not eat, and more if I eat carbohydrates and sugars. I itch a lot, however, not in the same places and not in any order. In doing some research on the subject I remember reading that there has to be several different tics to be considered Tourettes.
I have seen two neurologists and neither would diagnose it. My brother was diagnosed with TS at about 8 y/o.
I also have Sleep Apnea and Hypopnea, while sleeping only (as far as I know). My pulmonologist seems to think that the hiccups are caused by acid reflux. I take 2 Tums twice a day and so far have done one two week treatment of Nexium, without any relief. I had surgery for a deviated septum, after which, the hiccups seemed to have lessened slightly.
I will be having another nose and throat surgery in the next few months. The Dr. would like to see less episodes still. I went from 80 apneas to 20 each night. I wonder if the increased oxygen has been helpful in reducing the hiccups or if it has been psychosomatic.
I do not think that these are really hiccups, however, I do not have a better description for them other than an annoying “tic”. Can a traumatic event suddenly cause Tourettes?

Could this be Sleep Apnea?
Btw im 13 and weigh 103
Best answer:
Answer by Vulcan Oh boy – that’s classical sleep apnea. And it can kill you too – so it’s really great if you can go to the doctor and ask questions about it.
You’d get a blood test and see how your thyroid is doing – that will cause sudden flashes of anger. But being worn out from NOT sleeping and NOT breathing can sure cause this too.
You’re not typical though at 13 with low body weight. However, all those symptoms are indeed sleep apnea symptoms. Usually it’s old, fat people who get this. What happens is the throat closes down when you’re asleep (you don’t know it because you’re asleep!) – and you choke continually all night long. “Apnea” means “No Air” – “A-Pneuma”.
So it’s a great guess as to what’s going on there. Good luck. It’s so much fun to finally treat this and make it better!!!!

Question by Brittany: Could someone please edit this for me? Keep in mind that I am not finished.?
Fourteen years ago, I was born in Sherman, Texas in the WNJ hospital. I weighed seven pounds, three ounces, and I was twenty inches long. I was my parent’s first child, so they were absolutely thrilled. Within thirty minutes, I was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome which is a condition to which I couldn’t breathe in my sleep. I was asleep in the same hospital room as my mom and the nurse had turned off the volume of the breathing monitor so she could sleep. She woke up in the middle of the night and saw a red light flashing next to my crib, she pressed the call button and a nurse came rushing in. I was brought to the OR, and they shoved a stick down my throat to get out all of the mucus so I could breathe. After that, I had to stay in the hospital for weeks, until my body adjusted and I could breathe well in my sleep.
sorry its in the software catagory, i dont know how it got there. my bad

Answer by ms.answer it seems pretty dramatic but change this phrase “and they shoved a stick down my throat” it sounds so unscientific…
