Question by ablekominsky: My sleep habits are the worst. How do I change my life around?
Actually, I know the standard answers. Get a good routine going, go to bed at same hour and up at same hour every day, good diet, exercise, relaxation, blah blah blah. The trouble is I am now 73 and this has gone on for 11 years since my wife died. I live alone and have none of the good habits because I am always in the same rut and unable to change or, if I do change, it is for about two or three days and then I stay up to 3 AM and sleep to noon. Today, I am so mad. I stayed up ALL night and now it is sunny and 9:30 AM. I am not sleepy after being up for 22 hours, but know I need some sleep. I am afraid this is another lost day. I’ve been to the “sleep specialists” taken numerous sleep tests, got machine for sleep apnea, meds for sleeping and anxiety and depression. So why am I still up all night? Worst of all I don’t do anything productive in those night hours when I am awake. My best working times are, like most people, during the day.

I am sorry to hear about your wife. It is kind of hard to answer your question because you have been to all the specialist and they have giving you everything from medicine to some form of treatment and it hasn’t helped.

I suffer with insomnia at times my doctor has giving me sleeping pills but I don’t take them to strong. What I found to help me on those really stressful sleepless days is: tea, getting a book to read, and prayer.

Also you might want to try a natural sleep aid (Melatonin) here are some facts about it, you can find it at your local vitamin or nutrition store.

Melatonin is a popular remedy to help people fall asleep when the sleep/wake cycle has been disturbed, such as in shift workers or people who with jet lag.

Melatonin is a hormone found naturally in the body. The pineal gland in the brain makes serotonin which is then converted into melatonin at night when exposure to light decreases.

Melatonin is typically taken about 30 minutes before the desired bedtime. Some experts caution that melatonin should not be used by people with depression, schizophrenia, autoimmune diseases, and other serious illness. Pregnant and nursing women should not use melatonin.

I hope things get better, I will be praying for you!

Question by Leewo45: How important is it to correct a change in my bite?
I recently began treatment for sleep apnea with a custom-fitted oral appliance – a mouth piece that I wear at night to pull my jaw forward. This has done an excellent job in preventing snoring, but has altered my bite. My dentist was very concerned by this, but the doctor that fitted the device (also a dentist) indicated that a change in bite is not serious – nothing more than an annoyance. The change in bite does not bother me, but I am afraid it will cause damage to my teeth down the road. Is this something that I should be concerened about? Do I need to get the bite corrected? I’m kind of in a bad situation where I have to choose between the effective treatment for sleep apnea, and the bite problem.

1stly, since the appliance was to protract your jaw, a change in bite shud`ve been predicted. u need to consult an orthodontist as well, regarding the new bite and whether is it leading to a malocclusion. in this case, all your teeth will be affected over time and change in their positions may occur.

also, a change in bite could lead to temporomandibular joint dysfunction, though the manifestation is not immediate which might cause ur dentist to overlook the bite change.

so confirm with an orthodontist.

Question by LaRae L: sleep apnea – what can change with proper treatment?
my grandmother has sleep apnea. my mom, who works at a sleep lab and also has sleep apnea, always knew this and believes she has had it for 10 or so years and has told her to get a test done. well i was finally able to convince my grandma to get it done and its terrible. her average sleep time was 76 seconds. she only remembers waking up twice for the bathroom.

since she has had the test and will soon find out a way to treat it, more likely the cpap, what are some things that can change for her positively? will she be less tired in the day, not so much out of breath, maybe even more energetic? she weighs around 220 pounds so could this help her lose the weight more so since she’ll be getting better sleep? she eats very healthy foods and small portions throughout the day.

I have had sleep apnea since I was 17 and now I am 24. It may take her time to get used to the mask. She will have a better quality sleep and be less moody. You will have to see in time of what happens.

Question by sumbrawd: 7mth old has sudden change in sleep habits – concerned about sleep apnea?
Hi. My little girl is 7mths old and has never slept through the night. The best night of sleep we’ve had she still woke up 2-3 times. But the past two nights she has been waking up every hour. Last night at 3:30am I finally broke down and put her in her swing to sleep, which helped, and she slept until 6:30am. I’m starting to worry. At first I thought it could be the recent change in her schedule – I just went back to work full time two days ago but when I think back her sleeping habits started changing last week with her naps (She just doesn’t want to sleep). Then I thought maybe she’s teething. Then I came across something that said sleep apnea. I’m starting to worry. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Her routine is to go to bed around 6:30 or 7, she usually wakes around 6am. Then aroun 10am she gets a nap – sometimes an hour but lately she only sleeps for 20-30mins. Then another nap in the afternoon around 2, the same as in the morning, but again she’s only sleeping about 30mins now. I guess I just want to know if me going back to work could be a factor or teething? She doesn’t snore or anything, which I thought was a sign of sleep apnea.
She sleeps on her side with blankets around her, in her crib, with a night light on.

Of course I would say to call your pediatrician first. I really don’t know much about sleep apnea.

Somethings to consider… Is your little girl napping too much during the day? And is her room quiet and dark as possible?

What do you think? Answer below!
