Question by Bubbles: C-section on Friday and I have developed sleep apnea in the past few days…I’m afraid I’ll quit breathing???
I am very, very pregnant and will be going in for a c-section on Friday. I have recently developed sleep apnea from what I can tell. I wake up gasping for air, feeling as if my heart has stopped, and typically right in the middle of a huge snore (thank God my husband doesn’t have to sleep next to me right now). After a little surfing on the net, I’ve decided it is sleep apnea. I’m really huge with this baby, I have acid reflux now, some nasal problems, and I snore.

What I’m worried about is after the c-section they will put me under to sew me up. I’m afraid I will quit breathing and no one will notice. I suppose that is pretty silly since the anethisiologist will need to be right there during the surgery, but I’m still apprehensive.

Should I call the hospital surgery admissions and ask about this? Or just talk to the anethisiologist before surgery? Maybe I should call my OB..though I have an appointment on Thursday.
This will be my third c-section so I know what they will do. I’m not scared of the surgery. I’m apprehensive about the breathing issue.

I wonder why you think they will put you to sleep to sew you up when they didn’t put you to sleep to cut you wide open??? If they do put you to sleep they will have a tube down your throat and will breathe for you….so don’t worry, they know how to handle it. Work hard after the birth, as apnea is associated w/overweight….the throat has extra fat and blocks the airways, same w/snoring. Overweight.

Yes it very well could be sleep apnea. The only way to know is for him to get a sleep study done at a sleep center or local hospital that offers help in that area

Question by Jgfhj: Horrible breathing problems, sleep apnea, asthma?
Generally I have pretty shitty breathing problems. I’ve tried some different techniques, but it doesn’t help. At four years old I was rushed to the hospital because my mom found me in my room, my face was blue, and I wasn’t breathing, then I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and asthma. I had to sleep with a mask, and I had an inhaler. After my breathing progressed, my mom thought I didn’t need either of them anymore. Now my breathing is worse. My sleep apnea is horrible because I’m exhausted throughout the entire day, I feel like it’s hell to gasp for some air. I don’t do over-working activities, I’ve actually tried to stay away from them.

Should I re-visit the doctor? >_>

There are several ways to handle sleep apnea so you can get the rest you need. I’ve heard of CPAP machines, surgery and dental devices that help keep your airway open while you sleep. Yes, you definitely need to see a doctor and get something to help you sleep straight through the night.

Question by Randy: Long term use of Dis.Water for humidifing in a CPAP breathing machine. CPAP is for sleep apnea problems?
After reading the information regarding the benifits and complications drinking distilled water over a long period of time, made me think about using it in the humidifier for my breathing machine. Is there enough exposure over a long period of time to be concerned about. If so, is there any other options to concider. Thanks

Distilled water is the best type of water to use in a CPAP machine. Other types of water can cause problems with your machine over time. The amount of water that gets into your system from the CPAP machine is not enough to cause problems in your body. On the contrary, humidifying the air is helpful.
