Question by : Am I the only one this happens to? Waking up @ night feeling like I can’t breath or that I’m dying in my sleep?
I was wondering if I’m the only one who has had this problem. Basically, soon after I fall asleep… anywhere from right after I doze off up until 1-2 hours I will wake up in a daze feeling as if my lungs are tight and I can’t move any air until after I wake up fully. It doesn’t happen past an hour or 2 of being asleep.

This will happen almost every night for a while, and then it will go away completely and won’t happen at all for months at a time, only to start up again happening almost every night after many months have gone by.

I had a sleep test done in the hospital and nothing happened that night but I was told that my test was normal and I don’t even have sleep apnea.

Did they check you for asthma? I have asthma and the same thing happens to me.

Question by douglas m: Loss of breath before sleep?
Right before my body falls asleep, I wake up gasping for air. It feels like I’ve not been breathing for some time and I sometimes struggle to regain my breath because of panic. This can happen several times before I actually “nod off”.
Also, while trying to sleep, sometimes I feel that my heart is racing and that a heart attack is lurking.
Im not sure if this is related, but sometimes when Im just chillin’ I feel like my eyes are going to pop and my head is going to explode (not because of anger or frustration either).
Does anyone experience any or alI of these symptoms? I feel that Sleep Apnea can be ruled out due to a lack of other symptoms.

I would say Sleep Apnea anyway. You need to go to a sleep disorder clinic and be tested.

Do you drink enough water??

Dehydration is a possibility ~ some of the symptoms of dehydration are puffy bags under your eyes, dark circles under your eyes,constant yawning, dizzy spells and loss of balance, headaches and migraines and constipation and bloating and cramping and foggy thinking, irritability and moodiness….. :0)

Are you sure you aren’t just dehydrated buddy?? Expecting your digestive system to digest food and transport essential vitamins and nutrients with no water in your system is an extremely huge ask ………… actually puffiness anywhere in your body is a signal that your body is hanging on to the little bit of water that you have and are getting very dehydrated …… Water is imperative to life. Without water your body will have a terrible time breathing, digesting food, transporting nutrients, lubricating your joint sockets etc.etc.etc.etc……… nothing substitutes for water. your body needs at least 2 – 3 litres of water daily to function efficiently Geez, we need at least 2 litres daily just to maintain aspiration (to breathe)!! so drink up buddy ♥

Increase your intake of fresh filtered water 20 minutes before or after meals so as to enhance digestion rather than interfere with it …………… if you drink fluids during your meals it will only serve to dilute your digestive juices and hinder digestion ♥

also, try to cut back on drinks such as coffee, tea, alcohol, sodas and soft drinks (if you drink any of them) which will all do great job of dehydrating you. ie: just 1 can of soda or soft drink will make your body peesh out up to 12 cups of water !!! 1 cup of coffee will make your body peesh out about 2 cups of water ……….. read the book by F. Batmanghelidj, M.D…. “Your body’s many cries for water”…… an astounding and scary and very true read.

hope this helps♥

Question by Natez: Gasping for breath definitely means apnea?
I sometimes have a feeling like I’m gasping for breath in the middle of the night. I don’t have any other symptoms of sleep apnea (morning headaches, tiredness in the day, etc)

I live alone and sleep by myself. Is there any way to tell if this is apnea?

that is indeed a cardinal sign of sleep apnea, but the only way you will know for sure is to have a sleep study done.

Question by Latanian: Sleeping I can’t breath or move?
Lately in the past few weeks or so , when I am laying in bed and dozing off. My body freezes up. It starts out with me not being able to breath it feels like there is a pillow over my face but muffling the mount of air that I can take in. This freaks me out so I try to change positions but no matter how hard I struggle I cannot move any part of my body. My eyes are opened when this happens. I try to call for my husband for help but my mouth will not move. I feel like I’m laying there dying and there is nothing I can do but wait alone and afraid. After a few minutes ( seems like forever) I am able to move again and breath. I tried to look this up under sleeping disorders but the only thing similar was sleep apnea however with this disorder you do not know that you are not breathing and there is no loss of body control. Please help I am afraid to go to sleep so I have been staying awake longer and longer. I cannot see a DR. I have no insurance. If you have been through this tell me what to do before I suffocate.

It is called Sleep Paralysis… however, the few times it happened to me, I was able to breathe, but the rest of the symptoms you described are the same (can’t move/talk)…

Some possible causes:
* Sleeping in a face upwards or supine position
* Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
* Increased stress
* Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
* A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode.

Just try to be calm when it happens
