Question by KAREN R: I have sleep apnea and I am told I am getting a bipap machine. What’s the differnece between a cpap and bipap?

Answer by Remy
Hello Karen!

I know that CPAP treats sleep apnea by using air pressure to keep the airways from your nose and mouth more open while you sleep.

But Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure:

* provides two pressure levels, one during inhalation and a lower one during exhalation.

* the air is delivered by a nasal mask or face mask.

* are used in older children and in infants as well.

* are smaller, less expensive and generally easier to use than conventional ventilators.

* BPAP devices are adequate for nocturnal ventilation and may improve blood oxygen level.

I hope it helps!

Question by ChrisK: Does a BiPAP require a different kind of mask than a CPAP?
I’m using a BiPAP (not CPAP) for sleep apnea. I use a full mask that covers my nose and mouth. Does the BiPAP require a different kind of mask than a CPAP? Or will any mask work on both BiPAPs and CPAPs?

Thanks!

Question by teacher93514: Are you using a BiPAP machine for sleep apnea?
I have just received mine and every time I try to use it, I get cramps in my toes and muscle twitching in my legs. At first, I could only use it for about 15 minutes. After 3 days, I’m up to about 40 minutes, but I do not fall asleep and I can’t keep using it after the twitching starts. Once I turn off the machine, it takes about half an hour before the twitching subsides.
My provider is very supportive. She’s changed the settings twice and I’ve noticed some improvement. I have a ResMed VPAP ST.

There might be something wrong with your settings on your machine. I would call the people who dispensed this machine to you and talk with them about your symptoms because these are not normal symptoms. You should be able to put the machine/face mask on and have a good night’s sleep. Something is wrong. You do not have to “build up” your sleep time with these machines.
