Question by ablekominsky: My sleep habits are the worst. How do I change my life around?
Actually, I know the standard answers. Get a good routine going, go to bed at same hour and up at same hour every day, good diet, exercise, relaxation, blah blah blah. The trouble is I am now 73 and this has gone on for 11 years since my wife died. I live alone and have none of the good habits because I am always in the same rut and unable to change or, if I do change, it is for about two or three days and then I stay up to 3 AM and sleep to noon. Today, I am so mad. I stayed up ALL night and now it is sunny and 9:30 AM. I am not sleepy after being up for 22 hours, but know I need some sleep. I am afraid this is another lost day. I’ve been to the “sleep specialists” taken numerous sleep tests, got machine for sleep apnea, meds for sleeping and anxiety and depression. So why am I still up all night? Worst of all I don’t do anything productive in those night hours when I am awake. My best working times are, like most people, during the day.

I am sorry to hear about your wife. It is kind of hard to answer your question because you have been to all the specialist and they have giving you everything from medicine to some form of treatment and it hasn’t helped.

I suffer with insomnia at times my doctor has giving me sleeping pills but I don’t take them to strong. What I found to help me on those really stressful sleepless days is: tea, getting a book to read, and prayer.

Also you might want to try a natural sleep aid (Melatonin) here are some facts about it, you can find it at your local vitamin or nutrition store.

Melatonin is a popular remedy to help people fall asleep when the sleep/wake cycle has been disturbed, such as in shift workers or people who with jet lag.

Melatonin is a hormone found naturally in the body. The pineal gland in the brain makes serotonin which is then converted into melatonin at night when exposure to light decreases.

Melatonin is typically taken about 30 minutes before the desired bedtime. Some experts caution that melatonin should not be used by people with depression, schizophrenia, autoimmune diseases, and other serious illness. Pregnant and nursing women should not use melatonin.

I hope things get better, I will be praying for you!

Question by Sherry: Is God keeping this person around because I’m going to the wrong church ?
A close friend of mine claims an aneurysm was discovered on an X-ray in 1999 after a car wreck. He has not had surgery or treatment for it. If this is true, how is it that it hasn’t disected. He also had gotten “messages from God” in the past that he was going to pass away in a certain month, which didn’t happen.

I am going to a church he considers to be legalistic and has been trying to get me out of it for years. If his sicknesses are genuine, is God keeping him around because of this? He used to call me on the telephone every night and we talked for about three to four hours (not always about my church) and I was getting annoyed (see Proverbs 25:17).

He also has had for many years:

Congestive heart failure
Severe asthma
Cellulitis of the legs
Sleep apnea
Obesity (well over 300 pounds)

Given all these conditions at once, how has he survived for so long unless it’s for the reason I stated? Since 2002 he had kept telling me his time was “short” until two years ago. He has stopped telling me that because he knows I won’t believe him. Am I wrong in being skeptical about his sicknesses. He is now 65 years old.

Question by allie_84_us: Husband has sore throat around winter time help!?
My husband usually gets a severe sore throat around winter time. He went to an urgent care center and they felt he had strep throat. Test came back negative. So of course he’s put on antibiotics to help and a allergy medicine. The doctor said he had no swollen glands in his neck/ throat area but his throat area is extremely red. He went to the doctor a year ago and didn’t know what was wrong with him.
He had croup as a child, I’ve read online it’s extremely rare but he doesn’t have any the horse voice, barking cough etc.
He wasn’t diagnosed for any sinus infection problem either.
Anything come to your mind? I feel he does have sleep apnea. He snores alot and he’s actually at a normal weight for his height. he wakes up congested with a sore throat and is ALWAYS tired.
Any ideas?

It could be that in the winter, we have our heaters on and it causes dry skin, itching and even i have a sore dry throat from it. Try using a humidifier next to him all night. I found that it helped me out a lot.

Question by 525: My cousin continues to smoke around her 3 year old VERY sick child?
He has been through it all since birth.. he was diagnosed with sleep apnea and severe asthma since he was 6 months old.

I’m no doctor but shouldn’t she stop smoking in the house and around him? It makes me sick that she can’t stop for his sake and just this past winter he was hospitalized for pneumonia and bronchitis. She thinks it’s just the way it is and it has nothing to do with her. I really want to tell her off but she’s too hard headed.

He takes 2 inhalers a nite plus a ton of liquid meds to stop him from getting sicker. I can’t keep my mouth shut anymore! Ideas?

You have a right to be concerned about a family member, especially a baby. Your cousin is an assinine psycho. Slap her face and push her in the pool.

I do not know of any place but I can tell you nursing schools do not do them. Nurses usually do not do sleep studys, RT and EKG backgrounds do.

You can probably work out a playment plan or can apply for medicaid.
