Question by bffly31: Has anybody ever had a sleep study done? What was it like?
Has anyone ever found out that they had sleep apnea through taking the sleep study? Is a Cpap always the recommended treatment? What other treatments are there? Has anyone found out what their sleeping problem was and felt 100x times better? Has it changed anyone’s life for the better? I have one coming up next Friday. I have been tired for as long as I can remember. I should have done this a long time ago. It has come in between everything in my life…friends, family, work, etc. I hope I can find some answers and start living a normal life and not feel tired every single day of my life!

It sucks. I also know 2 other people who just had theirs done too.

They stick these wires to your head and elsewhere – couple on your temples, several on your actual head (in your hair), on your chest, on your lower legs. They bundle them all together and tie them like it’s one big super cord.

They also put that clip on one of your fingers to check your oxygen levels.

They put a thick belt/band around your chest (with wires) to keep check of your chest expansion when breathing.

They put one of those oxygen tube type things just under your nose and tape it to your face (although no oxygen – it monitors your breathing through your nose).

So given all these wires attached to you, you can’t freely move and roll around in bed like normal. You’re semi-restricted. So very uncomfortable. Hard to sleep.

Plus if you have to use the bathroom, you have to call out to them so they can “unhook you” to go to the bathroom.

I don’t have sleep apnea. The 2 other people I know that had it, probably do have it, but just did it within the past month, so haven’t had results back yet. So not sure what the treatment options are.

Have they looked at other potential causes for your fatigue? Such as some sort of virus, bacteria, fungal infection? What about an autoimmune disorder? Low thyroid? Checked your heart out?

Question by Angel in Captivity: Anybody whose husband has sleep apnea—are you affected by it? Do you wake up late and tired too?
How are you affected by your spouse’s sleep apnea?
how effective are the CPAP machines?

Yes, I CAN honestly say that sleep apnea affects more than just the person suffering from it. My husband (funny enough) DOES have it, but its been much easier on both of us since he was diagnosed (sleep studies were conducted back in July) and has been sleeping hooked up to his CPAP machine. Though he isn’t overweight (the usual cause of most sleep apnea patients), he still has an abnormality with his trachea, and without air being forced into his lungs to keep his airway open, his trachea collapses on itself..causing horrible snoring and choking. At his worst (before being diagnosed), he would stop breathing several times an hour (110x in the first hour of his first sleep study!) and if THAT alone didn’t keep me from sleeping (we’ve got 2 young children/1 on the way..I’m afraid of him dying)…his horrible snoring WOULD. The snoring was so bad at one point, that he actually set off our home’s security system..lol. Don’t ask me how..it just did. There were many times that I’d wake up absolutely exhausted because of it (the worrying/noise)..
but now that he’s sought help for the apnea, we’re BOTH sleeping much more soundly, and waking up more refreshed.
