Question by ☼Lyla is pretty much done!: How is chiari malformation related to sleep apnea?
i’ve been experiencing some symptoms of sleep apnea for a while now, but i didn’t know they were out of the norm symptoms until recently. i’m jolted awake by my own snorting (lol?) quite frequently. i always thought it was just me being weird, but apparently that’s a sign of sleep apnea. i’m also really, really tired all the time, to the point where i don’t even go to bed early anymore because i know even if i get 12 hours of sleep, i’m still tired the next day. i’ve gotten used to it, so other than a lack of focus it doesn’t really inhibit my daily life.

but the thing i was thinking, is i’m not overweight. i, at first, figured it must not be sleep apnea since i’m not overweight. but the more i looked into it, i saw it can be a sign of a neurological problem. that obviously led me to wonder if it’s related to my chiari malformation. i tried looking it up online some, but all i found were publishments from the government or university, it was nothing i could interpret. all i’ve found is they can be related…but why? is this something i should worry about? should i tell my neurologist? should i get a sleep study?

if you need to know…
i’m 5′7 and 115 lb. i try really hard to gain weight, but i just don’t gain. so definitely not overweight.
i’m a vegetarian
i’m active (walk a lot and ride horses)
i was diagnosed with chiari just over a year ago, but my doctor said i was born with it
i used to get 8-9 hours of sleep in a night, but these days i get about 7. the symptoms started back when i was getting more sleep.

if you have any questions, i’ll try to add. thanks!

Question by Kevin T: sleep apnea pillar surgery ?
Has anyone had this procedure done?
was it helpful?
Painful?
Thanks..

Best answer:

Answer by madtrumpet
The problem with surgery for sleep apnea in adults is that there are many places in your upper airway that may be responsible for the obstruction at night, but not all of them are easily surgically accessible. If your soft palate is the problem in your sleep apnea then the pillar procedure may very well help you. It is pretty quick and easy, and pain should be minimal. However, although it is an excellent surgery, there is no 100% guarantee that this will definitively cure your sleep apnea.

Question by flip_flop2010: uncle forgot power cord to sleep apnea breathing machine. Anything we can do?
is there any like universal cord or something we can try- its a Respironics BiPap Auto M Series 12 volt 4 amp
Not too sure what that is- but I know we have 18,000 black cords here- if anyone has any suggestions or info- PLEASE HELP

Best answer:

Answer by somerandomdude
Try to remember what the cord looks like, whether it has the large square box or just a straight three-pronged cord, etc.

Look online for the exact make/model machine and try to download the instructions, to make certain you have the voltage information correct. Depending on the shape of the plug, another cord of the same power level may work, though I can’t say it’s exactly safe to do and is certainly not supported by the manufacturer.

On your cords, read the label on the converter box, to see the voltage setting. Don’t use anything that isn’t exactly the same. Does the machine have battery backup? Can you use that?

** edit **

Reading this over, it looks like there would have to be a special cord and power pack for DC power. If you don’t have that, you’re probably sunk. They definitely don’t want you using any cord but theirs, and looking at the pic, it doesn’t appear another household cord would fit.
