Question by Ashley: About a surgery for Sleep Apnea.?
I have sleep Apnea and my doctor recommended getting a surgery to basically hollow out my throat so i can breathe at night. the surgery is abbreviated UPPP. My friend, whos parents are doctors, does not think i shound get it because of risks and the fact i wld have to re-learn to swallow and that my voice may change? Is any of this reasonable? I dont want to be dependednt on a oxygen machine my whole life.
im not over weight, im 18 and pretty healthy. I am always tired though, hence my desire to get this fixed. the CPAP just seems like something that would wiegh me down at college next year. My doctor told me surgery would be good for someone my age. but im still nervous. I would also be getting a deviated septum fixed while I am at it to help with the breathing…

Don’t get it! Unless you absolutely have to- and make sure you stay in the hospital from four to eight days…someone i take care of just lost her 15-year-old grandson from this surgery….it was heartbreaking.

they will hook you up to a simple machine that will count how long of periods you go without breathing, if you do have sleep apnea you will go 20 seconds or longer without taking a breath.

Question by mandymay0709: Is this an out of body experience? Astral projection? Sleep apnea? Waking nightmares?
This has been happening to me since I was a child. Things have a slightly different “view” as I have gotten older. I wake up in my sleep. It’s REAL it is not just a bad dream or even just a dream. It happens in every state every house or tent every vacation. Always and anywhere. At first when I “wake up” I can’t move and I know immediately that it’s starting. So I can’t move and I am always really scared. I don’t see or hear things that aren’t there only everything the way it was when I was actually awake. The scenery doesn’t change. With the exception that I have thought that I saw my dog walking around once and when I forced myself awake he was not really there. And one other time I saw 2 large planks of wood levitating in my bedroom doorway. Very scared when I awoke. Recently it has been getting worse and more evil and scary feeling. I was slammed backwards into my bedroom wall about a month ago and was trying so hard to scream for my cat because he was right next to me and as I was coming to I heard myself screaming his name and it was not my voice…It was deep and scratchy. He heard me and was looking at me wide eyed and alert. I also had not moved. Within the same month I was sleeping on the couch and again it happened but this time I was completely paralyzed and couldn’t even try to open my eyes and I could feel something walking up the couch on my legs. This is becoming terrifying and intrusive to my contentment with sleeping. I am always worried that it will happen. I have to force myself to stay awake for at least 10 minutes before I can go back to sleep by smoking a cigarette watching TV and /or walking around. My first instinct is fear I have looked up numerous theories and subjects that could be an answer but there is always something that differs from my experience. I am 26 and have had this since I can remember. I just want some sort of answer or maybe idea that I can research. Please Help! Thank you

Question by JPar: Could I have sleep apnea?
Sometimes when I try to sleep I’m interrupted by shortness of breath, only for about 5 secs, and it feels like I’ve had a fright. This never happened while I was sleeping, only when I’m just about to sleep. I think I snore, but not sure and I am a bit overweight, I’m 19 years old. I’ve very rarely experienced daytime sleepness, only tiredness but that’s usually due to general bad night sleeps. I do twitch in bed once in a while since I was a child, but that doesn’t bother me but this does. If so what do you recommend I do?
I’m not actually sure if this happens while I sleep.

You may be starting awake just as you drop off to sleep if your airways are collapsing. You wouldn’t know you had fallen asleep.

Does your heart race at these times?

You should see a doctor to be tested particularly if your heart races (like having a fright). Also some universities do sleep studies – you could call them for a test.

Question by someoneoutthereishere: First time buying a CPAP machine, just diagnosed. Any recommendations?
Hello,
I was just diagnosed with sleep apnea after 2 sleep studies. The 2nd night I used a nasal cpap thing. So I go tomorrow to buy a machine and mask and start with the treatment.

My insurance usually pays 70% for most things, and I’m not sure if they are with this (they’re paying something, just not sure how much). When I talked to the place I’ll be buying from, they said my portion after insurance will be $ 433. So if they are paying 70% (again I don’t know, maybe it’s different with this) that would mean I’m getting almost $ 1,500 worth of equipment.

But from looking online at cpap machines, they tend to run even on the high end for about $ 8-900 at the most that I saw. And the masks were only at most $ 150 (that I saw). So is there something I’m missing? This seems ridiculously expensive.

Either way, does anyone have a good recommendation for the best machine and nasal “pillow” type mask? If money wasn’t an obstacle, what would be the “best”? I’m new to this, so thank you!

Most of the machines nowadays are very quiet and quite easily adjusted to. Make sure that you’re consulting a reputable dealer and take a test run before you commit to buy-cut it on in the store and gauge the noise level before you take it home.
As for nasal masks, most of my patients still have the old “pig nose” masks, the nasal pillows are the newest technology and it is all about personal preference. See if you can try them and get ready for a rough couple of days-your body has to adjust to this new therapy and the sleep that you’ll recoup will be worthwhile.
Good luck, I’m glad that they’ve discovered your problem.
