Question by The Curmudgeon: Questions about sleep disorder – Part One..?
I’ve been on sleeping pills for the last eight or nine months now. At first it was just the over the counter stuff you can buy anywhere but they quickly became useless, so I’m now on prescribed pills (Amitriptyline – hope I spelled that correctly) and even that isn’t working that great anymore.
Basically, I have a 12 hour work shift ahead of me and I’ve not slept all night (it’s 5am as I type this). I’ve had a blood test (find out the results in a few days) but I can’t imagine they’ll find anything there. Basically, I think the doc’s just going to give me stronger pills, which I’d like to avoid.
I read somewhere about Sleep Centre’s – any idea what kind of thing happens in there and if they get good results?
Also – I hate to sound like a drama queen and call it “insomnia”, but does this sound like genuine insomnia to you? I mean, I DO sleep, but very rarely without sleeping pills, and I tend to sleep better at afternoons on the couch etc.
Sorry to go on, but, well.. it’s 5am. I’ve nothing better to do.

Amitriptyline works for me even a 1/4 of a 25mg tablet. Maybe it’s a combination of stressful job and caffeine. Don’t take caffeine even a small amount as it always makes it more difficult to sleep at night even if you had it in the morning. I work right next to the sleep lab and I never heard of them treating insomnia, unless it’s associtated with restless leg syndrome. They mainly diagnose obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy. But I have seen documentries on T.V. about sleep clinics that treat insomnia.

Question by mandalynn2010: anaesthesia with sleep apnea?
My twenty-eight year old boyfriend is going to be having surgery done in a few weeks. He is having his tonsils removed and have a deviated septum fixed. However, he suffers from sleep apnea and is terrified to be put under anaesthesia. He is afraid that his body is not going to be able to wake himself up when he stops breathing? Is there anyone who has been under anaesthesia, and has sleep apnea. Or knows someone who has? I am trying to find a way to make him feel more comfortable with the situation. Thanks!

I’m a respiratory therapist that responds to all areas of the hospital. My husband also has sleep apnea. On the rare occasion that we are able to see a person before they go into surgery we try to find out what the level of Cpap that they are on so that we can put them on it as they come out of surgery to help them to breath a bit easier. While every hospital is different. I would recommend that your gentleman talk to someone in the surgical area and explain his concerns. They are valid. The team there should be able to provide him with a Cpap machine for put surgical use as he is waking up. Just to set his mind at rest, unless he has had a previous issue (or a family member has) the anesthesia should not be a problem. Pain control is usually the biggest issue. He should also be aware that in the post surgical setting he will have a nurse that is assigned to work with him one-on-one. He/she will have no other patient and will he at his bed side until he is ready to go either up to his hospital room or home. I hope that this helps.

i can see how it could, but they aren’t supposed to do that. mine doesn’t. your setting might be too high, but it needs to be tested, with you using it, preferably at a sleep clinic.
another possibility is that something else is causing the burping – for instance, severe anemia – really.

i dont think its your mattress. it could be something to do with your diet. i guess you have a lack of iron in your diet which makes you so tired. the lack of iron may lead to anaemia. do you take firsh oftern? if you dont try to include more fish and milk in your diet. =D
