Question by : please please help!? I have severe sleep deprivation/sleep disorder!!?
Im 17 now, and this all started when i was 14. I started to sleep late to stay up with friends on the phone or chat because it was awesome at the time. At first it was harmless, but over the years I could never shake off the habit. Im 17 now and a senior at high school and what worked when i was 14 does not work now. Im overburdened with homework/projects/college applications and i simply cant do them because im too tired. I feel tired all through the day and come home after school to sleep for 3-4 hours, after i sleep i do homework/project/study for tests/ apply to college or whatever it is and cant sleep until 1/2 am. I wake up for school at 5:45 everyday and the cycle continues. No matter how much i try to keep myself up after school and do homework then go to sleep soon after, my brain just doesnt work. I need to sleep then wake up then sleep again so i never get a full 7/8 hours of sleep only breaks of sleep. Its been happening for years now and its seriously affecting me and i feel too tired to do anything, i just want to lay down and sleep all the time. Help me in any way? do i have a serious/dangerous problem? how can i fix it so i just sleep at night?

I suffered with insomnia for a long time too. Have you tried 5HTP (herbal)? It works amazingly for me, but different people get different results. Seeing as you’re under 18 you might want to check with a naturopath before self medicating

Question by : Do I have a sleep disorder / am I burned out?
A little background. When I was growing as a teen, I would sleep 10-14 hours, every single night.

From age 18-19, I drank and partied more than anybody should. After settling down, I moved back in with my family, got rid of my friends who were bringing me down, and have been trying to go to college/get a job ever since.

Now I’m 20, and my sleep schedule is irregular no matter what I try!

I will sleep for 4 hours, wake up from a nightmare, stay up 8 hours, go back to sleep for 4-8 hours (usually from 8am – 5pm), then stay awake for 12-18 hours at night, and repeat the cycle.

Other times, I go to bed at midnight feeling exhausted, and sleep 12-13 hours!

I know when I have odd jobs and exercise I feel better & sleep better, but what can I do while I’m unemployed?

It’s embarrassing to see my girlfriend work hard all day, only sleep 6-7 hours, and repeat the cycle on a regular schedule, and be fine, while I’m doing next to nothing with my life, and feel like crap!

Well, the problem is that you’ve started a habit of inconsistent sleep. Trust me I’m fighting the same boat and working on finding solutions that are helpful.

1. Always try to wake up the same every day. Set an alarm clock. Do anything to make sure you wake up at that time. If you need to start waking up much earlier than you are consistently used to (for instance, 6:30am while used to waking up between 9am-11am), start with a more reasonable time such as 8am and work your way back slowly (adjusting 15-30 minutes a week). This is a great option because if you soon realize that staying up late is not worth it.

2. Try to wind down before bed. If you know it takes you longer to fall asleep, do something especially relaxing and does not put your mind to work. Turn off the computer, television, and other types of electronics. Take a bath, read a book.

3. If exercise energizes you, try to work out in the morning to help you get waking up right away. If it tires you out, do it closer to bed time (2-3 hours before).

4. If you know caffeine bothers you, don’t drink it a few hours before you go to bed. Learn what your body can handle and what keeps you awake.

It’s a challenging process. Don’t give up if you have some bad nights. It can take up to a whole month of doing the same thing every night to turn it into a habit. It doesn’t start overnight! Based on what you’ve stated, it doesn’t sound like a sleeping disorder as you are not presenting any unusual symptoms. If you were falling asleep consistently doing things such as having a conversation, driving, during a movie, sitting quietly, reading, watching TV, you can always set an appointment. Do you know if you have a history of snoring? The hard part is you really don’t know if you have a sleeping disorder until you get consistent as everybody feels pretty cruddy with an inconsistent schedule.

And don’t worry about your girlfriend. Some people don’t require as much sleep and have a schedule set down. I’m sure she’s been doing it for a long time. Ask her what she does for advice.

You may have sleep apnea. Even though you think you are sleeping for 9 hours, you’re actually waking up many times during the night, interrupting your sleep/wake pattern to the extent that you’re not getting enough actual sleep.

Are you overweight or have sinus issues? Those are two of the most common causes of sleep apnea, but anyone can have it. The best way to tell is to go to a sleep clinic where they can give you a machine to monitor your sleep habits.

Question by Brandi M: can a concussion cause permanent sleep disorder?
i got a concussion 2 years ago and ever since, i’ve noticed weird things happening when i sleep. the bigest thing is when i’m trying to wake up…. i open my eyes and i’m paralized, at this point i’m freaking out. i know what going on and i keep trying to calm myself down but it’s no use. after about 2 or 3 minutes i’m able to move and i’m fully awake. can someone please help me? this happens at least 2 times a week it’s getting to the point where i don’t even want to sleep.

ps: i’ve noticed if i don’t sleep as much it doesn’t happen
my concussion was really bad.. i fell out of a tree, head first.. i should be dead

Answer by Amy
I would think it would take an extremely severe concussion to cause side effects after this much time has passed. definetly get checked out by a doc. This shouldn’t be happening. If you are at the point where you cannot move at all after waking up, it is something to be concerned about.

Question by Sarah: Possible Sleep Disorder? Causing Problems At Home And Work!?!?
My husband has been complaining more lately about my sleeping habits. I sleep deeply and it is extremely hard to wake me. I can’t wake up to any alarm clocks I have had so far and I have been like this since I was a child. Even when I was a child, I didn’t wake up when our fire detector went off in our house. Now that I have a child of my own and I have to work and take care of him, this has become a huge problem. I am continuously late to work and someone has to physically come and wake me up. Also, I fall back asleep if there isn’t something physically keeping me up (like my husband poking and prodding me).

So, here is a list of my problems.
- I can’t fall asleep at night.
- When I do, I can’t wake up unless someone physically wakes me.
- I cannot stay awake unless someone else helps me.
- I am very irritable in the morning.
- If someone wakes me and I fall back asleep, I don’t remember.
- I don’t remember anything that happens immediately after I wake up (conversations, actions, etc.)

In general, I can’t sleep but when I do, I can’t wake up, and when I do, I can’t remember anything and I am angry and irritable.

Does any of this mean anything? Please help.
Mike, what was the point of your response? You’re an idiot.
