Anxiety Sleep Disorder help?

I have a friend who has had a lot of troubles sleeping the last few days. It’s going on three days and she’s only gotten 4 hours of sleep. She says that her mind is constantly racing and she has problems calming herself down. I’ve recommended her seeing a doctor, but due to her parents loosing their jobs, they don’t have any current health care on her.
Is there a way she can take non-prescription medication? Anything really.

Over-the-counter sleeping pills like unisom.
You can get them at a drug store for a few bucks. I take em’ all the time, they really knock you out.

Yes I just recently went to a therapist about that. My therapist told me to get a journal and draw w/e I feel and write whatever I feel no matter how silly and ridiculous is because it is meant for me to bring out my feelings and no one else would know. To get medication like that you can talk to a regular doctor it’s only if they think you need further assistance they will send you else where to talk it out. If her mother or father have her on their insurance she can use that,because I am broke my self with a single mother who works 2 jobs, it’s not easy. Give her a journal and tell her all she have to do is write in it what makes sense to her even when shes in a good mood so she can look back o it. If you are a really good friend, let her talk to you or a school counselor. Just get her mind off of that, what do you do for fun?

I would start with over the counter pills like sominex, nytol, benedryl, etc. They are all basically the same. They have diphenhydramine HCl as their main ingredient for sleep.However, all sleep meds can be habit forming, even over the counter meds. So when you stop taking them the insomnia can return.
Below is a long list I once wrote about ways to fall asleep. The list is so long that reading it might put you to sleep
What helped me a lot to fall asleep, especially when my mind was racing, was to lie in bed and listen to relaxation CDs, especially those that contain someone speaking with relaxing music in the background. The combination of voice and music is very soothing. Many of these CDs are available on eBay for very low prices.
A warm bath is a great way to help you to sleep (depending on the season). If you can’t take a bath, you can give yourself a foot massage with slightly warm massage oil, sesame oil, or castor oil from a health food store.
A helpful technique is to relax your body one part at a time. So you could relax your feet, your lower legs, upper legs, moving up from your lower belly up to your chest, etc., until your whole body is relaxed.
Of course, guided relaxation methods can help, imagining yourself in the country, the beach, or whatever is most soothing to you.
If you have annoying thoughts or personal issues that run through your mind when you are trying to sleep, you might have to talk to a counselor or therapist about that. I suggest avoiding prescription sleeping pills unless nothing else helps.
There are herbs that might help you to sleep, eg, valerian root, kava kava, chamomile, hops, passion flower, skullcap. Probably, valerian root and kava kava are the best. However, what most people don’t realize is that it can take a few weeks for some herbs to build up in your system before they start to work.
The minerals calcium and magnesium might be helpful for sleep. You can also try 5-HTP or melatonin. I would not take melatonin for over a month unless your doctor says it is ok.
