Question by Anon: Question about people with sleep apnea?
Don’t people with sleep apnea ever notice they can’t breath properly while in sleep and wake-up and gasp to breath? Or is it that any normal person in sleep can’t sense consciously weather he is suffocating or not?

My father has sleep apnea; He doesn’t notice anything while he’s sleeping.
I’m not sure it it’s that way for everybody with Sleep Apnea, but at least some don’t notice it.

  1. Katie says:

Some people with sleep apnea are awoken by the fact that they are not breathing, but they might not necessarily know that is why they woke up, or don’t remember waking up during the night. Excessive day time sleepiness is a sign of sleep apnea because you are waking up due to lack of oxygen during the night.

I have sleep apnea. No I dont notice that I am not breathing however I will wake up and feel as though I need to take a few deep breaths, not gasping for air though.

I will wake up with headaches and leg swelling. I dont have insurance so no machine right now.

Almost all the patients with sleep apnea don’t know they stop breathing in sleep. They have no idea that they have a very loud snoring or they gasp for air.
