  1. Erik C says:

Sleep apnea is caused by an abnormal amount of relaxation in the throat and pharanx muscles during sleep. It causes interruptions in breathing, which causes the normal patterns of sleep to be disrupted. Common treatments include forced air masks and surgical intervention.

Most people have sleep apnea. It all depends on the severity of the problem. Most people who experience this do not even realize they have a problem. Snorers are the most likely candidates for sleep apnea. Illnesses that may contribute to this are diabetes, a deviated septum, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, etc. You are you worried you might have sleep apnea, ask your physician about a sleep test.

I have sleep apnea and went through testing to determine this. Always sleepy in the daytime, woke up tired, fell asleep all the time.

Snoring and waking up at night (several times) are symptoms of this problem.

I now have a machine called a bi-pap that I wear at night to correct this problem and it has made all the difference in the world.

sleep apnea occurs when the soft tissue in the back of the throat or the tongue blocks the airway. Breathing stops and the person wakes up. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, right sided heart failure, congestive heart failure, heart attack and stroke…. it is very bad but very treatable. If someone you know has it they should talk to their doctor and see a sleep clinician.

  5. emmadropit says:

Sleep apnea is not “daytime sleepiness”. When you sleep, for whatever reason, you cease breathing. You therefore wake up a zillion times a night. Can be treated with a BPAP or CPAP.

  6. Pookie's mom says:

The majority of day time sleepiness is caused by OSA(obstructive sleep apnea). Symtoms are daytime sleepiness, decrease in cognitive skills and snoring. Left untreated can lead to heart attack or stroke while asleep. Treatment includes BIPAP (well tolerated) or CPAP, and weight loss (as indicated). If surgery is a treatment, find a surgeon who is very skilled in the corrective procedures. If you smoke, quit.

My daytime sleepiness is just caused by the fact that I don’t get enough sleep!
