My boyfriend has pretty bad sleep apnea. Short of going to a sleep doctor, what options does he have?

He snores, stops breathing, and then starts breathing a few seconds later after choking. It is really loud and he doesn’t get a good night sleep because of it. It’s awful trying to sleep anywhere near him because it is so loud. Any advice on OTC or natural options? What works the best? He will hopefully visit a doctor soon to take care of it, but we’re both in college right now and he doesn’t have a lot of spare time to find a doctor and get an appointment.

As far as I know, there are no options other than a doctor. He needs a device that forces oxygen down his throat when he sleeps. There are no pills or other over the counter things that will do that. Sorry. He needs to make the time and money to take care of that.

There are some pillows available which cause the neck to be extended more thus opening the airway better for better respiration. If you don’t want to purchase one, try rolling your pillow now in such a way where the neck stays as straight as possible. Leaning the head forward, bending the neck is what causes the snoring combined with some sinus cavity concerns. For that aspect, for some people, those breathe right strips work pretty well. These are both helpful for the snoring aspect. If he has severe apnea where his system stops breathing for a good while he MUST go to a sleep clinic and see a specialist.

NO he HAS TO see a doctor for this or he can die in his sleep. He has to get a C-Pap machine, unfortunately unless they give him some other advice. The majority of men with this problem are overweight and therefore can lose weight, or over 50. If your boyfriend is a normal sized young person this is especially concerning. I can’t emphasize enough that he needs to see a sleep specialist.

He really needs to see a doctor as soon as possible. Sleep apnea is potentially fatal. This is NOT something to wait until you have the spare time for. Seeing a doctor should be top priority.

Apnea, as I think you know, means the person stops breathing. This is a seious condition and should be diagnosed by a doctor. If it truley is apnea, what happens when he chokes and doesn’t wake up??? No one is too busy to die are they?? I would urge him to see a doctor right away. Most sleep studies can be done on a weekend or you can report at night and be released in the morning to go to classs. Don’t put anything above your life. I am sure the Professor would understand one missed classs if he had to.

really needs to see the doctor, get a bi-pap machine, i have one. that is very serious. he can try elevating his head on pillows and not sleeping on his back. this is nothing to play with. i have awakened and noticed i was not breathing and tried to tell myself to breath. and yes losing weight if that is a factor. take the time to see the dr. an ounce of prevention can be a his life savor. school will be there

Please get your boyfriend to a DR A.S.A.P. because for reals he could die from it. My brother died from sleep apnea and his heart exploded. Even just going to regular doctor would be preferable to nothing. You should keep a watch over him at night and wake him up if he quits breathing. I wish I would have known more about sleep apnea before it killed my brother.
