sometimes he sleeps for less then 7 hours… is he required to wear the mask while he is awake for the last hour?

    That is just a general reference number, he doesn’t have to wear it for exactly 8 hours. He only needs to wear it when he is sleeping.

    I use a CPAP machine. You only use it while you sleep. Sleep apnea only occurs during sleep.

    Generally if he has sleep apnea, it is only when he is sleeping. If he has other problems such as retaining carbon dioxide from COPD/emphesema/bronchitis, then he should be on it more. BiPap helps people who retain CO2. Most people with sleep apnea only need cpap. The bipap is always used with CO2 retention. I used to watch tv with mine on when my I first went on it to bring down the CO2. Now because of the regular bipap treatment they are normal.
