Usually once every couple weeks when I’m falling asleep, I get a very strange sensation in my head and I can’t breathe, move, or make any noise for several seconds. I am completely aware during this and have to try very hard to come out of it. Last night it occured several times. It would happen once, I would get out of it, try to go back to sleep, and it would happen again. This has been happening for at least a year. I am 17 years old. I thought it may have been hypnagogia, but I don’t experience hallucinations, unless the vivid closed-eye dream-like visuals I experience while completely aware count. Does anyone know what this could possibly be?

This sounds like sleep paralysis. It is a benign condition that is associated with narcolepsy, but may occur without any other evidence of a sleep disorder. A sleep specialist would be the person to talk with, but from what you say, I think it is unlikely that there is an underlying sleep disorder.

What you’ve got there is called apnea. It’s a sleep
disorder where the nostrils prevent the air from
passing through. The solution: Breathe Right nasal
strips. They come in boxes of 30, for approx $15.
    They look like band-aids.
Put one on the bridge of your nose just before you
go to bed. They’ll open your nasal passages. Just
be sure you’ve washed your face thoroughly first–
because your skin must as free as possible of
any dirt/oil/residue in order for them to work well.
