Right as I start to fade off into a deep sleep (I think this would be rem?) I’ll hear a sudden very loud bang that will startle and wake me. It always sounds like a door slamming or something running into the wall really hard. This has been happening for years now. But, i’ll still sometimes get up to check what it is. Please don’t say it is ghosts or something like that. This happens where ever I am. Hotels, family, home, etc. I just wonder if anyone else experience’s this?

Sounds like a classic sign of something called Exploding Head Syndrome….its very real, and is a form of something called a parasomnia. Some people also experience a flash of light when this occurs, but it’s not a sign of anything physical in the brain, and it’s imaginary…however, I’m not a doctor, and there could be other medical problems possible, so your best bet would be to talk to a doctor and have a sleep study done. If during the sleep study the loud bang happens, then they can pinpoint the cause much more easily.
In the meantime, you can do a few things to try and help alleviate the symptoms:
    1. Stop drinking caffeine for a few weeks.
    2. Establish a precise routine that you will follow prior to going to bed every single night, and go to sleep at the same time.
    3. Sleep in a dark, cool room, either completely quiet or with some “white noise” in the background.
    4. Sleep nude or in something that won’t restrict your movement.
    5. Sleep with your head a bit elevated, and don’t put your arms above your head, or curled up against your chest.
    6. Don’t exercise or eat for 4-5 hours before going to sleep.
    7. If you have things on your mind when you get ready to go to sleep, you should write everything down on a piece of paper, and then set it aside to think about in the morning.
If your doctor feels you have a sleep disorder, and nothing you try to do helps, there is a medication called clomipramine that some people use for this disorder, but as with any type of disorder, avoiding medication when trying to control symptoms is always the best first option.

You could try taking melatonin. You can buy it at a health food store. Many people say it helps them to sleep better and deeper.

I have never experienced this myself. Maybe you need to try some relaxation techniques or watch what you eat before you go to bed. Talking to a doctor would not be a bad idea, he might have a suggestion about a night time medication or something.

i have restless leg syndrom and i think that is your problem. it doesnt necessarily have to do withyour legs. your whole body can get all itchy or jittery or right when you fall asleep your whole body jerks and other things i also am jerked awake from noises that no one else has heard. it has went through my family for years. you need to go to the doctor explain your problem and see what he or she says

Maybe you should grow your own weed. This way, you can be sure that the only way it will be laced with something is if you lace it yourself. But seriously, all kidding aside. It does sound like you really need to seek medical help. There are professionals who really know what they are doing in sleep-related fields. I have a couple of friends who have gone to sleep study units where you sleep and they watch you to find out what your problem is.

Im no expert but maybe your scared to go to sleep. I have a sleeping disorder that makes me stay up until 2-3 in the morning but if i stay up after 3 i get paranoid. Go see a doctor

  9. Jessie says:

i’m not sure what you have, but i have sleep apnea, and doctors told me that keeping your head elevated helps all sleeping disorders. you should see a doctor to see what sleeping disorder you have if you do have one.

Well if it makes you feel better the same thing happens to me. I used to think I was going crazy it happen so much…then I got a barky little dog so that told me it was internal…she would bark if something ‘banged’ as loud as I heard in my head.

I have that same problem! Except I don’t always hear a loud bang. Sometimes I’ll be just laying there falling asleep, and out of nowhere I’ll jump up like someone tried to scare me.

I hear those noises aswell, i ve asked the dr but never really got the response i wanted. He tried to put me on antidepressants. I know you said not to say it was ghosts but i was told once by a psycic that it means that im in tune with spirits and you take that with you where ever you go, thats all i got.

I will help u.drink at-least 1 glass of water before going to bed. After that lie down in bed & don’t think about anything. Just sleep.
