I do not have a long term sleep disorder but rather am going through a shorter term stress which causes a lot of undue worry and nerves and that is not allowing me to get to sleep. Is there an over the counter sleeping pill which calms the nerves similar to a tranquilizer as well as allows me to sleep, I mean for this purpose rather than aimed at a long term disorder and if so, what brand?

Even if it’s a short-term sleeping/anxiety problem, it would be to your benefit to get a prescription as opposed to taking an over-the-counter remedy. Prescription sleep-aids like Ambien and Lunesta are non-addictive, physiologically, whereas any pill that I know of that you might buy over-the-counter will be physiologically addictive, meaning that you’ll experience symptoms of withdrawal once you stop taking it and you might even build up a tolerance to it. Ambien and Lunesta can be habit forming, but they’re not physiologically addictive. Melatonin might help you, but it didn’t help me. If you can learn to meditate, that’ll help you, too. Another tip, and this one might actually serve you best, is to drop the temperature in your home at night. You’ll be more likely to fall asleep if it’s cold in your room. Good luck.

I use tylenol pm or Melatonin. Melatonin is a natural substance in the body and more gentle, but maybe not so much the first time, so go slow. There are other things more expensive that your pharmacist or his assistant can direct you to. Pharmacists seem to be as good as doctors in some ways, imo. Of course that will vary.
The sri’s are great and community therapist can be cheap, according to you income. I found them very helpful, their medications mostly, that they give you free.
