My father said he was watching the show “1001 Ways to Die” on Spike TV and there is actual medical research that proves if you die in your dream or actually have impact when falling out of a window – you will die! I told him there was no way you could prove that, because if someone dies, they won’t live to tell you about the dream. But he said it’s been proven and there is a way for doctors to do an autopsy on the brain to tell if you had this type of dream.
He said it’s an actual “sleep disorder” that is fatal. I tried to research it with no luck, because I’m not a believer! Anyone know what the name of the disorder is??
*** PLEASE no stories about your “death” dreams and how you’re still alive… or interpretations of death/dying dreams! I am informed in those 2 areas! :) ****

  1. The mom says:

There isn’t any sleep disorder that I am aware of where you would dream yourself to death. There is a sleep disorder called sleep apnea that can lead to a cardiac arrest, but that’s because you quit breathing for too long. There isn’t any way to examine a brain after death to find out what it was doing before you died. Tests of the brain all require a live, working brain because what you are looking at is electrical activity and blood flow- two things missing in a dead person. I don’t think you can dream yourself to death, nor that you would die if you dreamt you impacted the ground or something. And as you point out, you would be hard pressed to find the evidence, since the dead person could not answer the question. I think this one needs to be taken with a large grain of salt, if not the entire shaker. He must have misunderstood what they were saying.

I think your logic wins out here. Go to spike.com and watch the episode if you can. Get the name of the disorder and research it. Don’t believe everything you hear from the TV, especially second hand.
PS I have died several times in a dream and all that happened is that I woke up in a panic and sweating. Quite disturbing actually.

  3. You remind me of the babe says:

i think this is an urban legend. i did some research before answering and i keep coming up with sites that say it is an urban legend. however, i can see that if you had like a night terror or something that scared you so much that you had a heart attack, that could be true, but dying in your dream doesn’t seem to have any impact on real life.

  4. Cale says:

ok the thing is yes people have died it was bc they had weak hearts and the shock surprised them so much they had a heart attack. Another way someone can die in their sleep is if they stop breathing they may think they are chokeing in their dream but if their body does not react form the shock they may suffocate

  5. ninjasla says:

ooh i watched that show i luv it!!
but yes it is true but is unlikely ot happen
she imagined this guy like hurting her and she got so scared that she actuallly died in real life

  6. joseline says:

ya its happened my friends aunt.

  7. chloecr9 says:

    ooo, thats weird.

  8. humpty dumpty says:

You know i don’t give a **** about the points but this is just absolutely bullshit. I hit the bottom when I fall in a dream, I have bled to death in a dream, I have been shot, Oh God just any number of things. Your dreams are your dreams and they are for help in your waking life, not ways for you to die. I am 44, I would bet I am older than your dad. A big clue here is spike tv is for entertainment, not for factual scientific information.Tell your dad that and see how p;issed off he gets
